An Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee investigates and seeks resolution of consumer complaints involving automotive services and periodically inspects service providers for licensure compliance. Candidates will be required to work in one or more counties within that region.
Under the general direction of a Senior Automotive Facilities Inspector:
Vehicle Safety Field Office - Region 2 is currently accepting applications for Automotive Facilities Inspector, G-16. With location pay in certain Regions (see Additional Comments below). Counties included in Region 2 include: Bronx, New York, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, and Westchester.
To be eligible for appointment, candidates must meet one of following conditions as detailed below:
The Automotive Facilities Inspector title series includes various languages such as: Chinese, Creole, Italian, Korean, Russian, and Spanish. Please note: For a language title, you will be required to take and pass the Civil Service Language proficiency exam at a level that will ensure the ability to perform the duties of the position.
*This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

1. Appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester Counties will receive an additional $4,000 annual downstate adjustment. Appointees who work in Dutchess, Orange, or Putnam Counties will receive an additional $2,000 annual mid-Hudson adjustment.
2. These field positions are located throughout New York State and require extensive field work and daily travel within a designated region of assignment. Appointees to these positions will be required to operate a motor vehicle; therefore, you must possess a driver's license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
Hours of the position will be discussed at the time of interview, including questions regarding Flextime, AWS/Compressed work week and Telecommuting.
