Charter Steel is hiring an Automation Controls Manager!

Summary:

In this leadership role, you will oversee the technology, equipment controls, and automation system activities for our business unit. You will collaborate with leadership, management, and consultants to develop solutions and manage the implementation and daily administration of manufacturing systems. You will develop, coach, and manage team members to drive technology, controls, and automation projects for sustainable growth. Additionally, you will foster a culture of Safety, Trust, Teamwork, and Continuous Improvement through effective collaboration and relationship-building across the organization.

  • Location: Saukville WI (Relocation Assistance Available)

  • Schedule: 1st shift, Monday-Friday

  • Travel: Up to 10% travel

Key responsibilities:

Leadership & Management

  • Manage and lead business unit automation activities for high availability and superior performance in a 24x7 support model.

  • Provide guidance, direction, and support to the team through coaching and development opportunities.

  • Develop and retain a workforce with the appropriate mix of manufacturing knowledge, technical skills, and competencies.

Project & System Management

  • Evaluate automation control system needs and initiate projects to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.

  • Oversee upgrades to existing systems and implementation of new systems.

  • Develop, own, and maintain software and hardware platform contracts.

  • Collaborate with the management team on technology and automation resource estimating and management, including a 12-month rolling capacity plan.

Continuous Improvement & Safety

  • Role model and foster a continuous improvement mindset and environment for the team.

  • Maintain a safe working environment and support the division's safety programs consistent with the company's mission and values.

  • Follow Environmental, Quality, and Safety Management System procedures and requirements.

Communication & Relationships

  • Provide department managers with regular updates and recommendations through informal and formal communication.

  • Develop and manage business relationships with technology vendors and suppliers.

  • Coordinate with corporate IT infrastructure group to leverage and maintain IT hardware, network, and servers.

Strategic Planning & Optimization

  • Analyze and recommend capital projects that support the annual Business Plan and long-term direction of the business.

  • Optimize performance information flow from manufacturing processes to MES and other database systems.

  • Stay current with trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in the industry.

What you'll need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Technology or a related field or equivalent experience.

  • Five plus years' progressive leadership experience managing direct reports and teams.

  • Two plus years' experience working with major vendors (hardware, software, services).

  • Two plus years' experience leading projects and utilizing Project Management methodologies and tools.

  • Working knowledge in automation control system design and implementation.

  • Working knowledge of Process and Control theory, including digital control and signal processing.

  • Ability to problem solve and work effectively with multi-level teams in cross-functional areas.

  • Ability to communicate and present effectively with all levels in the organization.

Nice to have:

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Technology field.

  • Experience with business unit software and hardware platforms.

  • Experience working in the primary metals industry.

  • Experience with modeling physical systems in software.

  • Understanding of software architecture design

  • Knowledge of key hardware devices (PLC, HMI, drives, network components, servers, etc.)

  • Working knowledge of Power Distribution and Power Electronics.
