Under the general direction of a Deputy Chief Counsel, the Assistant Chief Counsel supervises attorneys involved in litigation and legal activities. The role may include coordinating complex areas within the Legal Division and overseeing statewide legislative programs.

The Caltrans Legal Division comprises five offices across California, including Sacramento (headquarters), Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fresno.

While in-office, work occurs in climate-controlled buildings; occasional travel to legal offices and training sites may be required.

Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of a Deputy Chief Counsel, supervise attorneys in litigation and legal activities. Coordinate specialized areas and oversee statewide legislative initiatives. Working Conditions

Location: 100 South Main Street, Suite 1300, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Multiple positions may be filled. Telework is supported but subject to policy and operational needs. Travel to headquarters and other locations may be required. Candidates are responsible for their commute expenses. New hires will be placed at the minimum salary unless otherwise justified.

Minimum Requirements
  • Valid driver's license
  • California State Bar License
  • Complete State Application (STD Form 678)
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ): up to 3 pages, addressing knowledge of civil litigation laws, transportation law, organizational understanding of Caltrans, supervisory experience, legal research and defense skills, policy formulation, and fraud prevention capabilities.

Foreign transcripts require evaluation for U.S. equivalency. Visit NACES or AICE for evaluation services. Redact personal info from transcripts.
