Overview
Attendance Officer (40 hrs./wk., 260 days) under the supervision of the Intervention Department Director investigates truancy referrals and supports reduction of chronic absenteeism. The role performs truancy and chronic absenteeism intervention activities, makes referrals to community resources, prepares reports and supporting documentation, and performs related duties as required.
Responsibilities
- Respond to requests for investigation and evaluation of truancy and chronic absenteeism cases; consult with schools, locate students, parents/guardians and other responsible adults; interview relevant parties in person or by telephone; work with school staff and families to develop attendance agreements; inform parties of legal issues regarding compulsory attendance laws.
- Gather data and prepare detailed reports of findings; maintain records and correspondence as required by district policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with community agencies such as social services, law enforcement, recreational, religious, educational and legal services; refer students and parents to community programs that support the student and family; identify and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
- Patrol identified areas to locate truants, transport students as needed, perform home visits, and provide testimony in court.
- Support district attendance requirements by participating in the Student Attendance Review Board and other interventions, including multi-tiered system of support teams; identify early intervention attendance strategies for schools; maintain caseloads of formal attendance monitors; issue citations for habitual truancy where appropriate and per policy.
- Participate in meetings, ongoing staff development, and professional growth activities to improve practice and student support.
Employment Standards
Required
- Education: Successful completion of 30 semester or 45 quarter units from an accredited college or university in psychology, sociology, social services, humanities, criminal justice or related field.
- Experience: Two (2) years of successful experience working with at-risk students, preferably in an educational setting. Experience in consulting with families and community agencies. Relevant investigative experience is helpful.
- Knowledge: Basic interviewing, counseling and casework principles; basic investigative techniques; report writing and record-keeping; laws, regulations and procedures affecting truancy issues; community resources.
- Skill: Interviewing diverse individuals, gathering and analyzing information, maintaining accurate records and case files, preparing reports, using computer systems, and maintaining effective working relationships; ability to think and act quickly and with good judgment in challenging situations.
- Licenses/Certificates: CPR certification required.

Salary: Grade 22
Sch A: $23.29 (entry step); Sch B: $28.03 (entry step). Salaries subject to annual adjustments. New employees are normally placed on the entry step.
