Terry Virts, an astronaut, was raised outside Baltimore in Columbia, Maryland. Being an only kid, he knew from reading his first book on the Apollo missions in kindergarten that he wanted to be an astronaut. He graduated with a master's in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1997 and a bachelor of science in mathematics (with a minor in French) from the United States Air Force Academy in 1989. Virts participated in an exchange program at the École de l'Air in 1988 as a student at the Air Force Academy. He received his pilot's license and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After completing his training, he was assigned to the 22nd Fighter Squadron at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany and the 36th Fighter Squadron at Osan Air Base in the Republic of Korea. At Edwards Air Force Base in California, Virts was selected for test pilot school in 1997. Since then, he has flown more than 4,500 hours in over 40 different aircraft types.

On November 23, 2014, Terry Virts was aboard the Soyuz TMA-15M departing from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Following the passing of Leonard Nimoy on February 28, 2015, Terry posted a picture from the International Space Station showing his Vulcan greeting, Live long and prosper, as the ISS passed over Boston. As the leader of Expedition 43, Virts commanded the International Space Station in March 2015, spending over 200 days in space. He starred in the IMAX film A Beautiful Planet, which debuted in April 2016; the film features breathtaking imagery of Earth from space, much of which Terry shot from the ISS, showcasing our planet's beauty and the impact of human activity.
