Savannah State University established in 1890, is the first public historically black college or university in the state of Georgia and the first institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. The university's students select majors from four colleges - Business Administration, Education, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and Sciences and Technology. Job Summary The Associate Provost/Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs (AVPAA) advises on matters of educational policy and development of the University's teaching, research, and community service programs. The incumbent assists the Provost in supervision of all aspects of the University's academic programs, budgeting and institutional research reports. The VPAA is responsible for planning, leading, managing, and directing the academic areas related to student success, student learning outcomes and general education. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for faculty development including new faculty and adjunct orientation, ongoing development programming for faculty across the career spectrum, and community engagement. This position provides regular support to the Provost/VPAA. May be directed to perform job related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas. Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and implementation of educational policies.
  • Work collaboratively with Academic Deans on academic program development, academic policies, faculty/academic staff development, student grievances and appeals
  • Assist the Provost/VPAA with strategic planning, accreditation, institutional effectiveness, academic assessments, and enrollment
  • Assist the VPAA/Provost in supervision of all aspects of the University's academic programs, budgeting, institutional research reports
  • Works with the Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs to assure quality academic programming.
  • Under the direction of the Provost/VPAA, supports the Office of Institutional Research in compliance of regional accreditation (SACSCOC) and institutional effectiveness processes across university constituencies.
  • Works with the faculty to maintain the integrity and quality of the general education curriculum.
  • Ensures the implementation of an effective faculty development program for full-time and adjunct faculty, consistent with the university mission and vision statements and retention goals of the university.
  • Collaborate with the Provost/VPAA in leading the academic team in the planning, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the university catalogs, class schedules, and facilities use.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of academic policies.
  • Promote innovative curriculum development, instructional design, and revitalization processes.
  • Supervise all areas of student support including grievances, and service-learning
  • Interpret and ensures all academic standards and policies of the university to students, faculty, staff, and university constituents are current and posted accordingly in the Faculty and Student Handbooks.
  • Serves as a member of the academic leadership team and promotes cohesiveness and coordination among team members.
  • Serves the Provost/VPAA by representing the chief academic officer as requested.
  • As directed by the Provost/VPAA, represent the university on various university-wide councils and committees.
  • Effectively represent the university in the community.
Required Qualifications
  • An earned doctorate from an accredited university
  • A minimum of eight years of work experience in higher education
  • Two (2) years of administrative experience at the level of department chair OR Four (4) years of experience as an Academic Program Coordinator
  • Proven record of teaching and scholarship sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of associate professor in one of the academic departments of the University
  • Demonstrated experience with online degree programs
  • Demonstrated experience with international programs and curriculum development with a global focus
  • Must understand, support, and articulate (both internally and externally) centrality of the academic enterprise and SSU's role and mission
Proposed Salary The proposed salary for this position is $120,000.00 to $130,000.00 annually. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
