HIRING SALARY RANGE:$62,000 - $64,000

The North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is a public, residential high school for juniors and seniors from across the state. The School's mission is to educate academically talented students to become state, national, and global leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; advance public education in North Carolina; and inspire innovation for the betterment of humankind, through challenging residential and virtual programs driven by instructional excellence and the excitement of discovery. In addition to the residential and online program, numerous opportunities exist through the Division of Extended Learning, which serves North Carolina through outreach and collaboration with public schools and communities. The division also seeks to provide all students with access to an academically rigorous curriculum and experiential learning opportunities that support STEM and critical inquiry through courses, conferences, summer programs, and teacher professional development.

Description of Duties:

This is a permanent, full-time,position with a one-year term in the Extended Learning Division at the NCSSM-Durham campus.

The primary purpose of this position is to develop and lead the Explore STEM Virtual Mentoring Program, which provides virtual STEM career mentoring, guidance, and resources to high school students. Key responsibilities include building relationships with STEM industry professionals and NCSSM alumni to serve as mentors, and engaging students and local school leaders to encourage participation. Additionally, this role will manage participant recruitment, mentor and mentee training, ensure compliance with minor protection policies, and evaluate program outcomes.

The position collaborates closely with NCSSM Extended Learning staff and contributes to NCSSM Extended Learning's broader outreach efforts to support program participants and contribute to division-wide initiatives.

General Duties

  • Collaborate with NCSSM Extended Learning staff, other NCSSM departments, and external partners or consultants to support the development, implementation, and growth of theExplore STEM Virtual Mentoring Program.

  • Lead the ongoing management of the program, including strategic planning for expansion beyond the pilot year.

  • Implement and model evidence-based best practices in youth mentoring. Lead program evaluation efforts to assess effectiveness and impact.

  • Prepare reports and communicate regularly with internal and external stakeholders in education and industry.

  • Ensure program operations comply with NCSSM and partner minor protection policies.

  • Track expenditures and support budget management.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with NCSSM alumni and STEM industry partners to build a robust and sustainable network of STEM mentors and advocates.

  • Design and deliver a support framework of optional and required resources for college and career planning, with a focus on supporting students' successful transition into postsecondary education.

  • Provide individualized, holistic college, career, and academic advising to students and families.

  • Develop curriculum and learning materials, such as videos, activities, and resources, focused on STEM career identity development, career awareness, and planning.

  • Recruit STEM career mentors from existing and new partnerships, and develop and deliver mentor training aligned with program goals and expectations.

  • Recruit student participants through in-person, virtual, and social media outreach conducted year-round. Design and deliver mentee orientation and training to ensure program readiness.

  • Establish and sustain partnerships with schools and school districts participating in Extended Learning outreach efforts.

  • Provide support to participants in summer outreach initiatives such asINSPIRE,Step Up to STEM, and other programs that serve underrepresented students.

  • Assist with additional NCSSM Extended Learning projects focused on STEM outreach, professional skill development, and career readiness.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of NCSSM Extended Learning.

The position may be eligible for a hybrid/flexible work schedule. This position requires occasional in-state travel, including some extended trips, as well as regular availability during evenings and weekends.

The selected candidate must possess a valid driver's license with no serious driving-related convictions.

  • Experiences with mentoring, teaching, and/or coaching youth in grades 7-12 or opportunity youth age 16-24.

  • Proven experience with assessing potential barriers and developing strategies to recruit and support a diverse student population.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to connect with a wide variety of constituents.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple project deliverables.

  • Enthusiasm to build relationships with a wide variety of constituents, virtually with occasional face-to-face interaction.

  • Experience implementing successful instruction, training, or workshops virtually.

  • Background or education in a field of STEM, or experience working in a STEM industry.

  • Experience in recruiting and engaging with STEM professionals and STEM alumni to participate in outreach.

  • Experience in designing, developing, and providing instruction to grades 7-12 or opportunity youth age 16-24 in professional or career skills.

  • Experience in working independently and collaboratively to implement or support a program.

Post-baccalaureate credentials (e.g., master's degree or higher), although a bachelor's degree plus two years of professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

  • Experience in providing academic or career counseling in secondary or post-secondary education settings.

  • One year of experience independently managing complex projects and independently leading decision-making for a program or project.
