Associate Director of Educational Theatre & Content Strategy

POSITION STATUS: Full Time – hours are variable
Position Summary:The Associate Director of Educational Theatre & Content Strategy plays a key leadership role in producing and delivering high-impact theatre productions and workshops across a national tour. Working closely with the Chief Artistic Programming Officer and cross-functional teams, this position ensures that all educational theatre content effectively supports youth mental health, equity, and well-being.
This role leads the strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation of programming, overseeing quality control, cast and crew engagement, external partnerships, and the development of educational materials. The Associate Director also collaborates on new work development, staff training, and conference presentations.
This is a new 3-year grant-based position.
- Collaborate with the Chief Artistic Programming Officer on the successful execution of a national educational theatre tour focused on mental health education for students and staff.
- Serve as Producer for Educational Theatre tours, overseeing season planning, show selection, staffing, and program needs in partnership with Artistic and Production teams.
- Lead regular team meetings with cast members alongside the Production/Company Manager to monitor progress and address challenges.
- Coordinate and lead training sessions for both theatre companies.
- Manage staffing needs in collaboration with the Casting Director, particularly at the start of each tour season.
- Oversee the development of all educational content that extends learning beyond performances, including:
- Video content
- Pre-show speeches
- Post-show workshops
- Learning guides for schools and educators
Research & Program Development
- Collaborate with the content team, health experts, and evaluators to inform season planning and program direction using data from Kaiser Permanente and other sources.
- Serve on the new work development team and act as Project Manager for the creation of new plays, workshops, and mental health-focused theatre content.
Evaluation & Reporting
- Act as the main liaison with external program evaluators (e.g., University of Miami, Ohio).
- Coordinate with the bookings/marketing team to analyze program data and outcomes.
- Co-author semi-annual reports to Kaiser Permanente using evaluation data, in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
- Provide monthly performance reviews per touring region, highlighting successes and identifying areas for improvement.
Professional Development & Conferences
- Update and revise annual staff training in collaboration with internal training leads.
- Consult on mental health initiatives such as WIRE, supporting workplace well-being.
- Support and co-produce Imagination Stage's presence at national conferences, working with the National Outreach Manager.
Quality Control
- Ensure all performances and workshops meet organizational quality standards and authentically reflect directorial vision.
- Regularly check in with stage management and review rehearsal reports to maintain consistency and excellence across all performances.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years working in the arts or arts education setting is preferred
- Knowledgeable in Theatre for Young audiences and Applied Theatre techniques
- Strong background in mental health education, youth development, or social-impact programming
- Experience in producing or managing theatrical works, especially in educational or community settings
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills
- Ability to manage teams, timelines, and complex multi-region programming
- Comfort with evaluation tools and working with data to drive improvement
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- Annual Salary: $65,000-$88,000, based on both geographic location and level of experience
