Job Description :
The Stony Brook School, a distinguished independent, faith-based boarding school, seeks a 12-month, full time associate director of college counseling with extensive knowledge of the college admissions process to join a dynamic and collaborative team. This position will begin on July 1st, 2024.The ideal candidate will possess the enthusiasm, dedication, and desire to effectively guide both students and parents through the college application process. The Stony Brook School believes strongly in the idea of fit, matching the needs of students with the college. Therefore, the college counselor must possess strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to not only asses students strengths, but also be able to see the potential in each student. The college counselor will work closely with both the Director and Assistant Director in fulfilling and enhancing the vision and mission of the college counseling department. The ideal applicant will possess:
  • A profound alignment with the Christian mission of our school, including a desire to mentor students and to challenge students to understand themselves in light of Christian teachings.
  • 3-5 years of experience in college counseling or college admissions is preferred.
  • Exceptional writing and communications skills, with a talent for providing constructive feedback on student writing.
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence, energy, and a collaborative and empathetic spirit.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of students and parents throughout the college application process.
  • A Commitment to diversity, unity, and belonging, advocating for each students unique identity and priorities.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the flexibility to work evenings and weekends during critical application periods.
  • Proficiency in computer skills
  • Bachelors Degree required; Masters Degree (or higher) preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • Guide students and their parents/guardians through all aspects of the college application process, including list building, application completion, essay writing, and financial aid.
  • Manage caseload of 30-40 juniors and seniors, providing individualized counseling and support.
  • Write correspondence and compelling letters of recommendation for each senior, as well as for other students as needed.
  • Assist with editing and reviewing essays and college applications.
  • Provide individualized college counseling to the junior and senior classes.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with college admissions professionals.
  • Participate in the teaching team for both junior and senior college classes.
  • Stay abreast of current trends in college admissions through college visits, workshops, and professional conferences.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the college counseling team, including assisting the Director of College Counseling, the Academic Dean, and the Head of School on special projects and assignments. This will include, but is not limited to, being a member of the academic advising team.
  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the Director of College Counseling, including advising, coaching, chaperoning, teaching, and supervising residential life activities, based on the school needs and personal interests of the individual. The ideal candidate will be willing and able to expand roles as needed to meet team and school needs.
