Position Details: One regular, part-time position, 30 hours per week, 11 months spread over 12 months per year on the Oceanside campus. The work schedule will be Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. The person selected for this position will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation.
This is an extended-day position, subject to possible fluctuations in daily working hours, and may be exempt from compensation for overtime in excess of eight (8) hours in one day. Hours worked in excess of forty (40) hours in a week period shall be compensated on an overtime basis.
Compensation: Starting at $42,682.75 or $45,045.00 per year ($29.85 or $31.50 per hour), salary range 19, step 1 or 2 on the 2022-2023 classified salary schedule. Initial step placement will be determined based on directly related experience with annual step increases up to step 5. In addition, after five years of district service, employees earn a longevity stipend that increases over time.

Basic Function: Under general supervision, train students on the use of assistive technologies compatible with their accessibility needs; work with students, faculty and staff to adapt course work and help facilitate accessible content requirements; ensure accessibility equipment and software environments are properly maintained and are in sound working order; and perform related duties as assigned.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Provide information to students with disabilities on the various types of assistive technologies available to meet their needs, ranging from large-print materials, digital media, character recognition and text-to-speech software, Braille and tactile materials to specialized adaptive equipment; work with students to evaluate compatibility with their accessibility needs, consistent with the baseline accommodation recommendations made by their counselors; seek combined approaches that will convey information in the best possible manner; ensure approaches meet state and federal requirements and are consistent with related standards such as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0.
2. Provide support to students and their instructors by helping to adapt course materials such as textbooks, handouts and exams into comparable and accessible print, digital or tactile formats; use design software and a variety of specialized equipment and technologies to fill requirements.
3. Provide training and assistance to students with disabilities in the uses of standard computer lab software and hardware to complete their course work and access email and district web-sites; set up and administer test environments for students requiring testing accommodations; work with the Access Specialist and Student Services Coordinator to devise and implement accommodations in more difficult areas such as math and science, where more complex notation or shape/model based is used to communicate essential concepts.
4. Install, test, troubleshoot and resolve accessibility hardware and software to ensure it is maintained in appropriate operating condition and can be configured for individual student needs; as necessary, work with assistive technology vendors and publishers about technical configurations and methods for resolving maintenance issues; document methods and resolutions.
5. Research, test, and demonstrate emerging technologies and new products that could better meet student needs and fill in gaps in available, practical and effective solutions, particularly in math and science disciplines and mobile device solutions. Help assess the viability, compatibility, and limitations of existing products and provide recommendations for new educational technologies or strategies that could enhance accessibility for students in multiple disciplines and computer open-lab. Contact hardware/software vendors for pricing and product information as needed.
Other Duties:
1. Consult with counselors and disability specialists on students' accommodation needs and document clarifications and determinations.
2. Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Of:
1. Uses of multi-platform computer hardware, peripherals, specialized equipment and software to produce materials in alternate media formats along with the use of dedicated assistive technology tools to address the specific needs of students in a college-level environment.
2. Application and adaptation of media forms, including braille, e-Text, audio, large print and tactile graphics, in conveying a wide range of college-level curriculum using varied methods of instructional delivery to meet individual disabled student learning requirements.
3. The Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act (504 & 508), CA Code 11135, CA Title 5, and closely related standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. Other relevent federal and state laws/regulations pertaining to fundamental accessibility and core job duties.
4. Learning styles and limitations associated with various types of disabilities.
5. Principles and practices of sound business communication including English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
6. Web design to meet accessibility requirements as applicable to assigned responsibilities.
7. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment including computers and applicable software programs.
Ability To:
1. Work with students with various disability types to provide assistive technology training and assist them in determining appropriate alternate media and/or assistive technologies to meet their individual needs and preferences.
2. Analyze situations accurately, evaluate alternatives and adopt effective courses of action.

4. Interpret, apply and explain district policies and procedures and reach sound decisions in areas applicable to the work.

6. Operate a computer, specialized alternate media equipment and software and other standard office equipment.
7. Troubleshoot and resolve device errors and software problems in assistive technologies.
8. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
9. Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
10. Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability issues.
11. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.
Education & Experience:
To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college with an associate degree in a related field, and at least one year (1) of responsible experience in working with disabled students that provided familiarity with determining appropriate alternate media and assistive technologies to meet their needs; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
NOTE: For work experience, one year is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 12 months, or at least 2,080 hours.
Desirable Qualifications:
1. Previous student support experience within a K-12 or postsecondary education setting.
2. Previous experience working within a computer lab setting.
Licenses & Other Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the district's vehicle insurance program.
