Overview
Assistant Store Director (ASD) - Kings District role at Kings Food Markets. The ASD is actively involved in customer service, assists the Store Director with total store operations, and may supervise 100+ bargaining unit and non-contract employees.
Responsibilities
- Overall management responsibility for operation of the retail grocery store during the Store Director's absence, including store performance, cash control, inventory and security, customer service, and staff management.
- Track, analyze, and act to improve store performance by forecasting weekly/daily sales goals and meeting or exceeding established goals.
- Communicate sales goals, department performance, and sales opportunities with staff to ensure positive results.
- Forecast, schedule, and monitor labor in line with sales and productivity guidelines and wage budgets; create action plans to address cost control issues.
- Support Store Director with development and direction in executing strategies to improve product placement and appearance.
- Monitor display accuracy and appearance to implement promotions; ensure products are properly displayed and ordered to maintain in-stock conditions.
- Manage issues related to store maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and sanitation.
- Oversee and monitor cash handling and accounting; ensure store security.
- Prioritize, plan, and coordinate work activities; manage time and resources to meet objectives.
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements and company policies (e.g., check cashing, security, safety, sanitation, wage and hour).
- Focus on customer satisfaction; ensure employees provide superior customer service.
- Select, train, develop, and manage job performance of store employees, with assistance from other management personnel.
- Provide constructive feedback, set performance expectations, and identify developmental opportunities.
- Maintain professional relationships with union officials and ensure compliance with applicable collective bargaining provisions, if any.
- Maintain positive working relationships with direct reports, peers, supervisors, suppliers, and customers; handle difficult situations effectively.
- Motivate others to perform and serve as a role model; instill a positive attitude in employees.
- May perform other management duties to keep the store functioning effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of assistant manager experience managing a department/team within a multi-department operation in retail or service, or two years as a department manager with similar responsibility.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree is preferred.
- Strong customer service and supervisory skills.
- Perishable inventory management experience (no exceptions).
- Solid understanding of overall store operations.
- Proven ability to demonstrate strong leadership skills.
- Physical ability to repeatedly use hands, arms, legs, and feet for sustained actions (e.g., walking, stocking).
- Ability to stand for extended periods in a fast-paced environment.

Travel
May be required to travel for training or corporate programs and focus groups; travel to other stores to assist may also be required.
Schedules
Stores operate 24 hours in many locations; applicants must accommodate a variety of shifts, long hours, nights, holidays, and weekends. Days off during the work week are rarely consecutive. The ASD spends a significant portion of the day on the sales floor managing employees and interacting with customers.

Salary range varies by location and experience. Example: Queens, NY $72,400.00-$101,400.00; Westchester County, NY $28.00-$33.00; White Plains, NY $66,600.00-$93,300.00.
