Title: Assistant Secretary for Agricultural Affairs

Location: NYC or Albany

Salary: $155,000-165,000

The New York State Executive Chamber is looking for a dynamic and dedicated individual to fill the role of Assistant Secretary for Agricultural Affairs. This position is pivotal in advancing the Governor's agricultural agenda and ensuring effective oversight of the Department of Agriculture and Markets, along with various relevant boards and commissions.

Duties:

  • Assist the Deputy Secretary for Agriculture & Environment in comprehensive State agency management duties, which include preparing updates, coordinating meetings, managing priority projects, fostering new initiatives, and driving agricultural policy forward.
  • Ensure that agency operations align seamlessly with the Governor's strategic vision.
  • Act as a key liaison and collaborator with senior staff at state agencies, enhancing operational effectiveness, strategic planning, and initiative advancements.
  • As a subject matter expert, develop legislative and funding proposals that support the Governor's annual State of the State agenda and facilitate key policy implementations.
  • Build and nurture relationships with essential stakeholders such as New York farmers and industry partners, proactively engaging with these communities.
  • Coordinate with the budget department and agencies to manage capital programs and initiatives, including support for the Great New York State Fair.
  • Collaborate with communications teams to manage press inquiries, announcements, and event details.
  • Work closely with the Governor's Washington, D.C. Office to address federal issues impacting assigned program areas.
  • Represent the office at meetings, site visits, seminars, and conventions, delivering remarks as needed.
  • Review and greenlight regulatory actions and rulemaking relevant to the agriculture sector.
  • Prepare and assess briefing materials, legislative proposals, budget initiatives, and other necessary documents for the Governor.
  • Carry out additional related responsibilities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree combined with a minimum of 8 years of professional experience in public administration, public policy, agriculture, or a closely related field.
  • A master's degree or Juris Doctor can substitute for one year of required experience.
  • A strong passion for and understanding of agricultural policies.
