The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides high-quality drinking water, manages wastewater and storm water, and reduces pollution to protect public health for New Yorkers. DEP is the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the U.S., with nearly 6,000 employees.

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) manages a portfolio of capital projects valued at $23.8 billion, supporting DEP's operations and infrastructure development. The In-House Design (IHD) directorate offers design and engineering services, including architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and other disciplines, focusing on high-priority projects.

BEDC seeks to hire an Assistant Mechanical Engineer for IHD's Quality Assurance (QA) Section in Queens, NY. The role involves managing fabrication, welding, casting, FRP, materials, fasteners, and painting systems according to specifications and standards. The candidate will review and approve QA test procedures, collaborate with contractors and project teams, conduct field surveys, and review contract documents for compliance and deficiencies.

Preferred Skills:

  • Team collaboration and positive work environment fostering
  • Timely and accurate task completion
  • Welding experience or exposure (preferred)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint (preferred)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics with one year of experience, or
  • Baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering technology with three years of experience, or
  • Baccalaureate degree plus a master's in mechanical engineering or mechatronics.

This position is open under the 55-a Program for qualified persons with disabilities. NYC residency is not required. The salary range is $64,242 – $96,395 annually.
