Responsibilities

  • Serves as role model and resource for staff; leads staff development, mentoring, coaching, and progressive discipline as appropriate.
  • Monitors attendance, ensures appropriate staffing and skill mix to optimize patient outcomes and safety while managing costs.
  • Coordinates care delivery and staff assignment based on patient needs and clinical competency for optimal unit operation.
  • Assists in scheduling, payroll, and integrating services across the care continuum.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed to support unit operations.
  • Provides leadership support of other unit(s) in the service.
  • Holds self and others accountable for delivering exemplary care in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Maintains accreditation, regulatory standards, service standards and policies at organizational, local, state and federal levels.
  • Communicates with clarity and integrity to build trust with all stakeholders; communicates patient care issues and safety concerns to leadership in a timely manner.
  • Regularly communicates with the Nurse Manager about patient safety, clinical practice, staff performance, and unit initiatives.
  • Participates in drafting nursing and organizational policy with frontline staff; supports shared governance.
  • Supports data collection and uses data to drive practice changes improving quality, safety, patient experience, and productivity.
  • Assists leadership in maintaining licenses, certifications, and mandated trainings for unit staff.
  • Fosters high reliability concepts and a culture of inquiry, innovation, and transformation.
  • Participates in nursing research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice efforts.
  • Leads and supports development of new insights to complex situations and programs; exercises independent judgment in duties related to staff discipline, performance, and hiring decisions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Registered Professional Nurse licensure in New York State
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing
  • Certification in nursing leadership required upon eligibility
  • Ability to apply nursing process toward achievement of outcomes addressing patient/family satisfaction and quality indicators
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership skills
  • Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association
  • Physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity; ability to handle and move reasonably heavy weight

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in nursing or health-related area
  • Two or more years of clinical practice in the related patient population
