About the role The Assistant Manager - Public Safety, reports directly to the Senior Manager for Public Safety. They will run the daily operations of the team, including ensuring proper staffing levels, scheduling of staff overtime and paid time off, and assisting with various administrative tasks such as departmental payroll. Applies coaching, staff development, strategic planning, and emergency response experience to enhance the overall departmental effectiveness, team morale, and professionalism within a multi-cultural museum environment. They will be an integral part of the Emergency Response Team. Responsibilities: Public Safety
  • Manage the Public Safety teams including Captains, Special Officers, Supervisors, Control Room Operators and Museum Attendant Guards, developing schedules, duty rotations, replacing callouts, and maintaining administrative systems for staffing
  • Conduct special investigations as directed by Security management
  • Maintain and review key control program and a system of security patrols
  • Responsible for the safety and protection of all related museum buildings, collections, equipment, personnel, museum visitors, and trustees
  • Establishes and maintains opening and closing procedures that ensure optimal visitor experience
  • Creates and enforces roll calls protocol to properly secure the collections, exhibitions, programs, and visitor experience
  • Adapts strategies to mitigate emerging threats and develops a culture of proactive threat prevention in accordance with museum policy
  • Maintains open lines of communication with colleagues to ensure efficient day to day operations
  • Coordinates and collaborates with Facilities Operations, Exhibitions, Membership, Visitor Experience, Special Events, and all other departments within the museum to execute on museum events and programs
  • Train staff in basic guest services and security skills. Actively monitor staff interactions with visitors, clients, artists, and other staff to ensure a safe, secure, comfortable experience for all
  • Provide leadership and guidance while serving as a mentor/coach to staff
  • Provide timely, appropriate feedback to staff on performance, both positive and corrective; effectively communicate escalated employee issues to Security Management team
  • Administer appropriate counseling and disciplinary documentation as needed to ensure compliance with museum policies and the CBA
  • Process payroll for the teams, managing schedules, overtime and budgets
  • Conduct equipment inspections and inventory (hand wands, radios, CCTV)
  • Assist with updating standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Administer building security and fire safety technologies: fire alarm systems, access control, and video management systems
  • Resolve escalated security situations, providing appropriate warnings and complete ejections and/or arrests if warranted or necessary
  • Always Ensure enforcement and compliance with Brooklyn Museum policies
  • Assist with directional and informational inquiries. Serve as escalation point for complaints/issues
  • Appropriately document all major and minor incidents
  • Represent the Brooklyn Museum and the Public Safety Department in an exemplary manner
  • Apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems to successfully perform and direct varied and complex tasks
  • Perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without the loss of efficiency or composure
  • Operate with the utmost discretion on staff, guests, and leadership needs; conducts confidential investigations as needed

Emergency Response
  • Establishes and maintains a safety-first culture by promoting and modeling safe work practices and timely training
  • Develops, maintains, and assists in implementing crisis management and disaster recovery strategies for the museum- including but not limited to readiness assessments, recovery strategy development, and emergency response planning
  • Develops and drives the implementation of the department's risk identification and threat mitigation programs to support and assist the museum's fire & life safety team, threat analysis, and vulnerability management
  • Acts as Museums liaison with local Police, Fire and City Agencies, private securities and law enforcement counterparts in both public and private sectors
  • Oversees First Responders Program, (AED, CPR) including annual training and responding to emergency calls on the floors
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required and a minimum of 3 years' managerial experience in the security field, or equivalent
  • Background in law enforcement or military is a plus
  • Hold NYS Security Guard Instructor certification
  • Holder of Certificate of Fitness for F-89 Fire and Life Safety Director
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain FDNY Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Fire Alarm (S-95), Certificate of Fitness for Indoor Place of Assembly (F-03), Certificate of Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor (W-07)
  • Demonstrated ability in and knowledge of crisis management and threat/risk identification as well as mitigation actions
  • Possesses organization and time management skills, outstanding interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated success in team building and collaborating across departments
  • Demonstrated the ability to work under minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks/ projects simultaneously, while meeting demanding deadlines
  • Knowledge of Computerized Building systems (Security, Fire Alarm, Parking Lot)
  • OSHA 10 training
  • CPR\AED\First Aid certified
  • Experience in employee relations in a union and non-union environment.
  • Experience in CCTV Systems
  • The scheduled days off for this position are Sunday and Monday but must be able to work a flexible schedule and evening hours to support after-hours' events and extended operating hours at the Museum and to address unforeseen situations
