Bedford Swim Squad (BSS) is seeking a passionate and experiencedAssistant Head Coachto join our dynamic, growing and high-performing swimming club.Following recent changes in the squad at the turn of 2024/2025 with the appointment of Jack Sangster to Head Coach, the restructured coaching team are seeking to expand the operational capacity to meet the demands of the squad and inject new skills andapproaches.

About the Role:

The ideal candidate will assist in leading training sessions across the swimming groups, developing athletesto perform at their best, and supporting the Head Coach in delivering high-quality swimming programs. The individual will need to be hungry to deliver, learn and improve while patient enough to refine stroke skills and execute excellence in dives and turns. This should be matched with a desire to measure and monitor performance and adopt tailored training methodologies away from the transitional ‘gains frommeters in thepool'. There will also be a requirement to assist in developing a close relationship between the BSS Swim School and the Squad to nurture ambitious individuals to join the Squad.

Ideally, the candidate will have aninterest in sports nutrition andhow the right balanced approach to optimising achievement with the right fuels at the right time can bring both short and long-term gains without making an issue of the subject.

The squad has a new objective to bring scienceand learning to the pool and swim training,where gains can be measured in more than just times.

Key Responsibilities

Training and Coaching:

  • Design and implement effective training programs for swimmers of all levels.
  • Assist in planning and conducting structured swim sessions, focusing on technique, endurance, and speed.
  • Provide individual feedback and performance assessments to athletes.
  • Continuously monitor swimmer progress and adapt training plans accordinglyto meet individual and squad goals.

Competition and Athlete Development:

  • Lead coaching and support swimmers andparents at various levels of competitions.
  • Prepare swimmers for competitions, ensuring peak performance during events.
  • Support athletes in setting and achieving personal and team goals.
  • Analyse race performance and provide constructive feedback,both immediatelypoolside and in post-eventanalysis.

Club Operations and Leadership:

  • Supervise coaching staff and provide mentorship whereappropriate.
  • Ensure adherence to club policies, health and safety regulations, and safeguarding protocols.

Community Engagement and Communication:

  • Foster a supportive and motivated environment for athletes and club members.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, athletes, and club officials.
  • Promote club values, teamwork, and sportsmanship among swimmers.
  • Engage in inter-club activities and outreach

Qualificationsand Experience

  • Swim England Swimming Coach Certificate/ASALevel2Coaching Award
  • ValidSafeguarding and Child Protection Training certifications.
  • Experience working withcompetitiveclub-level swimmers
  • Experience ofbeing a leadcoachatvarious levels of swimmingcompetition.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding ofstroke mechanics, starts, and turns, with the ability to articulate constructively on how to address and improve
  • Expertise inrace preparation and swimmer development
  • Ability toanalyse performance metrics and adjust training plans

Leadership and Communication:

  • Excellentteam-building and motivational skills
  • Strong ability tocommunicate with athletes, parents, and club staff

Workinghours

This is a part-timerole that requires a flexible approach to working hours, which will include evenings and weekendsfor training sessions and competitions.The role will require time for non-poolside duties such as planning, administration andcommunication.

Remuneration

Competitive. This position is offered on a self-employed basis in accordance with Swim England guidelines. The successful candidate will be responsible for their own tax and national insurance contributions and must ensure compliance with IR35 legislation.
