Join California State University's Labor Relations Team, where you will collaborate with labor relations professionals, HR, and campus leadership to support the success of the largest public higher education system in the U.S. Leverage your expertise in California labor law, union contracts, and strategic advising while building relationships and contributing to a collaborative, inclusive environment across the 23-campus system.Chancellor's Office StatementThe CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education.SalaryThe anticipated annual salary hiring range is $125,000 to $142,764, commensurate with qualifications and experience.Work ArrangementsFlexibility to telecommute two days a week, with three days on-site at the main headquarters in Long Beach, California.Premium BenefitsComprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision BenefitsGenerous vacation plan15 paid holidays a yearTuition waiver education program (also applies to eligible family members)Membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS)More details here: Comprehensive Benefits PackageClassificationAdministrator IIIPosition InformationThe Assistant Director, Systemwide Labor Relations is part of a robust team that provides labor relations advising for 23 campuses, serves as the CSU's advocates at contract grievance arbitration hearings and meet and confer sessions with the applicable union(s), and represents the CSU before the Public Employment Relations Board (PERB).What You Will Do (Responsibilities)

  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on labor relations matters, providing sound, authoritative guidance to campus management, the Office of General Counsel, and others.
  • Serve as the CSU advocate at meet and confer sessions and contract grievance meetings.
  • Arbitrate employee grievances, including developing strategies, preparing case summaries, drafting exhibits and briefs, and negotiating settlement agreements.
  • Represent CSU before PERB in all phases of the unfair practice charge process.
  • Research employment and labor law issues as needed.
  • Assist in developing systems to monitor the effectiveness of labor relations policies and practices.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for campus managers and administrators in advocacy and labor relations.
  • Analyze proposed labor legislation.
What You Will Bring (Minimum Requirements)
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Relations, Business, Law, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in union grievance resolution, arbitration hearings, or labor relations, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Ability to maintain an open, approachable demeanor and build rapport with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage relationships and priorities in a high-volume, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to travel within California, including occasional overnight trips.
  • Ability to research public employment policy and law issues.
What Sets You Apart (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Experience in faculty/campus relations in higher education.
  • California public labor law litigation experience in PERB law and practice.
  • JD or other professional degree preferred.
