Assistant Director of Mortuary Operations

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, accidents, suicides, sudden health issues, unattended deaths, correctional facility deaths, or suspicious/unusual circumstances, including applications for cremation permits.

Responsibilities
  • Report to and assume duties of the Deputy Director during their absence
  • Supervise staff reporting to the Deputy Director
  • Manage Forensic Mortuary Technicians – Levels 2 and 3, ensuring effective operations
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to staff
  • Coordinate with leadership, staff, and external partners to optimize services
  • Handle administrative functions such as personnel matters, meetings, data analysis, and reporting
  • Assist with personnel management, training, protocol updates, and scheduling
  • Perform user testing of CMS and attend related meetings
  • Conduct borough site visits and field operations as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus one year of mortuary/autopsy experience

For higher levels, additional experience is required: two years for Level II, four years with supervisory experience for Level III.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
