Responsibilities
- The Assistant Laboratory Director is responsible for professional and administrative work assisting in directing the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by supporting the technical and non-technical areas including the accurate delivery of test result to ensure performance quality of laboratory services.
- Directs, manages, coordinates and monitors activities and operations related to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine including management of staff and assigned projects. Develops and implements strategic goals and objectives.
- Leads the Quality Assurance program of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in collaboration with the Laboratory Quality Compliance Officer and Director of Laboratory Services. Works with hospital quality personnel to meet accreditation and regulatory standards.
- At the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services, the Assistant Laboratory Director will demonstrate leadership and team building qualities to include providing educational direction for laboratory staff and leading laboratory data management.
- Assists in planning, organizing, and directing laboratory operations and in the administration and implementation of laboratory objectives, policies, and procedures to ensure effective and efficient services and compliance with established standards, rules, and regulations.
- Assists the Director of Laboratory Services in the development, implementation, and assessment of long-range and short-term goals; conducts studies and analyzes reports and makes recommendations concerning laboratory staffing, organization, budget, and work flow.
- In this capacity, the Assistant Laboratory Director in conjunction with the Director of Laboratory Services helps in the development and implementation of the laboratory strategic plans, establishes effective relationships with administrative leaders and medical staff throughout Mercy Health Services, facilitates revenue growth and cost containment, and maintains and improves laboratory services' overall quality and financial performance.
- Plans, organizes, directs and evaluates the work of supervisory staffs of major laboratory sections and determines operational priorities. Delegate tasks and responsibilities to achieve operational efficiency and continuously promote process improvements.
- Plans and implements policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, State and Federal regulations including but not limited to CAP, AABB, FDA, TJC, DOH and ensures that laboratory testing meets the State and Federal mandated protocols and regulations. Ensure the laboratory team is constantly in a state of readiness for emergencies to ensure uninterrupted services are provided to patients.
- Prepares, reviews and conducts validation and verification studies of new methodologies and instrumentations, analyzes results and prepares reports and recommendations in coordination with laboratory quality assurance team.
- Manages special projects or assignments as directed by the Director of Laboratory Services.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and supports mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior set forth by Mercy Health Services.
- Works effectively in a team environment. Mentoring, coaching, participating and assisting peers in order to be successful with their established goals on professional development. Ensures laboratory team members are positioned to make improvements throughout the system. Encourages the team to achieve higher levels of performance and accountability.
- Oversight of designing, implementing, and managing a safe, high-quality, and effective laboratory use system. Initiates action based on internal and external safety insights, data, and national trends. Emphasizes and embraces the Laboratory's daily management system to improve patient testing methodology for patient safety.
- Responsible for coordinating with supply chain, including contracting, procurement, inventory optimization and distribution procedures.
- Performs other duties, responsibilities and activities as assigned by the Director of Laboratory Services which may change at any time with or without notice.
Requirements
- Requirements at this level consists of a bachelor's degree in medical technology or a chemical, physical, biological science or related field is required plus 5-8 years of bench level experience performing diagnostic laboratory testing and 3-5 years of management experience. Post graduate degree in business highly preferred (e.g. MHA, MBA )
- Diagnostic laboratory testing must include specific experience working as a technical supervisor or manager within a high complexity laboratory setting with experience managing multiple technical and non-technical areas including clinical specialties/subspecialties such as hematology, clinical chemistry, bacteriology and immunology, urinalysis, coagulation, phlebotomy and specimen processing. Knowledge in anatomical pathology and blood bank operations is a plus.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with situations where only limited standardization may exist. Must be able to reasonably make appropriate judgments in communications and actions with patients, physicians, other associates, outside agencies and vendors.
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills in written and spoken format. Able to listen to constructive criticism and be a good example on how to improve professionally within the context of laboratory operations. Promote direct, open, and honest communication within areas of responsibility; develop and maintain strong and effective relationships with medical and staff personnel.
- Experience articulating a vision and strategy in a way that inspires and motivates the laboratory team and focuses their energy on achieving departmental goals. Possess a passion for and commitment to a patient-centered care and customer-driven culture.
- Experience with Laboratory Information System. Familiarity with EPIC Beaker and Softbank is a plus.
- Certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), or categorical MLS (ASCP), MT (HEW), MT (HHS), MT (AMT), MT (NCA), MT (AAB) and 3-5 years of direct laboratory management.
