The Assistant Director of Campus Security assists the Director with implementing and designing all campus security policies, coordinating the Campus Security Officers and Dallas Police Officers on both campuses, and ensuring that ESD is a safe place for students, faculty, staff, visitors, parents, and alumni. He or she also acts as the assistant head of the Emergency Team in a campus emergency. The Assistant Director may act in the Director's place as advised or directed. The Assistant Director of Campus Security reports to the Director of Campus Security.

Essential Functions:

Assists the Director with overseeing the security and safety processes of all ESD properties, activities, events, transportation, and other situations as directed..

  • Assists in Developing Policy
  • Researches and develops Campus Security Policies and Emergency Procedures in conjunction with the Leadership Team.
  • Maintains Campus Security Officer ranking and certification system.
  • Communicates policy to all constituents (faculty, staff, students, parents).
  • Facilitates training for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Continually monitors policies to incorporate the latest best practices.
  • Proactively assesses risk on all campuses and develops methods and policies for reducing personal safety risks.
  • Assists in coordinating Campus Security Officers and Dallas Police Officers on Campus
  • Assists in determining and monitoring Campus Security Officer shifts, patrols, and procedures, and evaluates each officer's performance.
  • Assists in managing the Campus Security equipment to make sure it is appropriate, up to date, and functional.
  • Meets with outside organizations (Fire Department, Police Department, etc.) to assess the safety of the campuses.
  • Acts as assistant head of the Emergency Team in the event of an emergency on campus.
  • Assists in maintaining the annual department budget to ensure all expenditures are necessary and well planned.
  • Assists in coordinating campus parking and traffic routes.
  • Directs traffic on public roadways and inside the campus perimeter
  • Carries a firearm and may be required to use force to protect life in accordance with Chapter 9 of the Texas Penal Code
  • Processes invoices and oversees both large and small capital projects.
  • Assists in performing employee performance evaluations and goal setting.
  • Investigates and reports incidents on campus to administration.
  • Assists in overseeing departmental radio, CCTV, access control, fire, and other emergency systems.
  • Assists in designing, scheduling, and coordinating Campus Security Drills.
  • Assists in risk management assessments and student abuse risk management programs
  • Assists in coordinating and conducting security and safety inspections of all facilities and equipment.
  • Assists in coordinating and serving as a liaison with other schools, public safety officials, law enforcement, and other stakeholders in matters related to school safety.
  • Assists in training faculty, staff, students, and parents in school safety and security topics
  • Must be available to work different shifts on occasion as the need arises.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Follows employees screening requirements and uses screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Provides employees with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provides employees with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with students.
  • Requires employees to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Responds quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization's progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Responds seriously and confidently to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated reporting requirements
  • Communicates to all employees the organization's commitment to protect their students from abuse.
  • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Generally, 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Potential exposure to dangerous situations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
  • Peace Officer's Certification (TCOLE) preferred.
  • General knowledge of police work with a minimum of twelve years' combined experience in law enforcement, security, and/or emergency management with at least two years in a supervisory role.
  • Has or is able to obtain a Texas DPS PSB Level III License within 60 days of employment.
  • Must have the ability to carry a firearm during the performance of their duties and meet all legal requirements to maintain proficiency and licensing
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, supervise, and evaluate the Campus Security and Police Officers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and operating expenses
  • Effective interpersonal skills, specifically for addressing potential conflicts.
  • Requires successful completion of employment background screening and verification; requires valid state driver license.
  • Ability to take charge while responding professionally and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to analyze security and safety risks and make appropriate recommendations within a school setting.
  • Effective communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, students, parents, school administration and local law enforcement representatives.
  • Ability to formulate campus-wide policies.
