The Assistant Director of Business Development is responsible for managing our organization's ambitious business growth strategy. They will devise plans and strategies for developing new markets and will increase market penetration for our products and services in existing markets, supported by an international business development team. They will work with a network of test centers, preparation centers, institutional affiliates, and other stakeholders and strategic partners to ensure both the growth of the exams, and the successful delivery of our products.

As a member of the management team, the Assistant Director of Business Development contributes to the development and delivery of our organization's strategic objectives and business plan, and ensures that business decisions remain focused on the needs of existing and potential customers.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the organization's revenue goals within the designated region. Set ambitious sales targets for our products in line with the strategic business plan, and ensure these targets are achieved. Design, implement, monitor, and evaluate global and regional business development plans and strategies that contribute to market development, increase market penetration, and ensure that annual sales targets are achieved by product, revenue, region, and country. Manage the annual forecasting and budgeting and ensure accurate and timely metrics and reporting on progress against targets to achieve sales revenue.
  • Act as a beacon figure to corporate, government and educational stakeholders to position our business as their preferred option. Develop and maintain relationships with external partners and key accounts and build significant business with them. This will include test centers, institutional affiliates, existing and new high value opportunities (HVOs), healthcare and higher education agents, test delivery partners and other strategic relationships. Manage these accounts using our CRM system and ensure that revenue and impact potential are maximized.
  • Manage a culturally diverse, geographically spread business development team and ensure the team performs at the highest level and builds the necessary partnerships to achieve the organization's business objectives, growth plans, and revenue targets internationally. This includes working collaboratively and holistically across internal teams to develop and deliver strategic plans that benefit the organization, and its customers and stakeholders.
  • Develop and support the team, monitor performance, and ensure remedial action is taken where needed. Continually build and enhance communication, teamwork, professional development, and core skills among the team.
  • As a member of the management team, contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of the long-term strategic business plan and the overall success of the business. Provide commercial input into business decisions.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, business or related field
  • Strong commercial acumen and proven sales ability
  • Fluent speaker of English (minimum C1 level)
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills
  • Clear customer focus
  • Highly competent in standard IT software packages, including Microsoft Office suite and CRM (Salesforce preferred)
  • Strong presentation, negotiation and influencing skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Experience in the education sector
  • Experience working with an international customer base
  • Significant management experience, including managing sales/business development staff
  • Budget management
  • Sales forecasting and managing mitigation techniques to meet sales target
  • This position requires a substantial amount of international travel.

  • Master's degree in marketing, business administration or related field

Work Locations

Michigan Language Assessment is looking for candidates located in the Asia Pacific region, with a preference for those in or near Melbourne, Australia. The organization offers flexible working arrangements within Australia and also supports relocation. Candidates who are within a reasonable commuting distance to an international airport is preferable.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

Annual salary range $136,200 - $197,500 AUD.

This position requires both domestic and international travel for meetings. All applicants must possess a valid passport and the ability to travel. Additionally flexibility in working hours will be important in order to accommodate different time zones

Application Timeline

First round interviews will take place remotely in September. A final interview will be conducted in person in Melbourne, Australia between October 13 and 21, 2025.
