The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) manages water supply, wastewater, and pollution control for New York City, employing nearly 6,000 staff. The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) oversees capital projects valued at over $23.8 billion, supporting DEP's infrastructure.

IHDs Civil Section within BEDC is responsible for designing sustainable civil engineering projects for water supply and wastewater facilities, including site development, grading, drainage, stormwater management, and construction support.

BEDC seeks to hire an Assistant Civil Engineer for IHDs Civil Section at our Queens, NY headquarters. Under supervision, the candidate will assist in project design and construction, preparing engineering documents, conducting investigations, reviewing shop drawings, and coordinating with stakeholders.

**** Only applicants with permanent civil service status as an Assistant Civil Engineer or who have applied for Civil Service Exam # 5015 (proof required) are eligible. ****

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with contract drawings, specifications, shop drawing review, and field inspections.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in site plans, piping, grading, drainage, and stormwater management design.
  • Knowledge of code requirements, technical reports, and design software.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D preferred.
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • A valid NY Motor Vehicle Drivers License may be required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering from an accredited college plus one year of civil engineering experience, or
  • Masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college.

Additional details include eligibility for the 55-a Program, potential for federal student loan forgiveness, and that NYC residency is not required.
