Job Description :
The Assistant County Attorney is responsible for providing legal services at the direction of the County Attorney to the various divisions of Alamance County Government including Tax, Planning, Finance, Human Resources, Parks & Recreation, Public Health, Board of Elections, and the Sheriff's Office.
  • Deliver full-spectrum legal services, including in-depth research, legal analysis, and strategic advice to County officials and department heads on matters involving local, state, and federal law.
  • Represent Alamance County in litigation and administrative proceedings, including the North Carolina Property Tax Commission, Board of Equalization & Review, and various state and federal courts.
  • Lead or assist in complex litigation, including tax collection matters, property disputes, employment litigation, and contract enforcement.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, interlocal agreements, ordinances, resolutions, policies, and legal memoranda to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Advise on the interpretation and application of statutes, regulations, and County policies, proactively identifying legal risks and recommending solutions to support effective governance.
  • Support the Planning Department with land use and special use permit matters, including advising on quasi-judicial proceedings and development regulation.
  • Counsel Human Resources on employment law issues, personnel policies, and employee grievances, including compliance with state and federal labor laws.
  • Provide real-time guidance to management on crisis response, emergency declarations, and risk management, ensuring County compliance during rapidly evolving situations.
  • Conduct legal training and seminars for County staff and elected officials, enhancing organizational understanding of public law, ethics, and best practices.
  • Uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and customer service in all interactions with County staff, officials, outside counsel, and the public.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned by the County Attorney.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina; member in good standing of the North Carolina State Bar. Admitted, or eligible for admission, to the Federal North Carolina Middle District Court.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible legal experience, preferably in the area of civil litigation and/or local government law.
  • Proficient in legal research platforms (Westlaw, LexisNexis) and Microsoft Office Suite.
