Position Summary:
The Assistant Controller will play a central role in the leadership and transformation of the internal accounting function, with a clear path to becoming the department head. This position is being hired in advance of the planned retirement of the long-time Accounting Department Manager, and will allow for a robust handover and training period to ensure continuity and long-term success.
Reporting directly to the VP and working alongside a committed internal team and several virtual staff, the Assistant Controller will oversee all core accounting functions, lead and develop the team, and ensure timely, accurate delivery of financial reports to clients.
Primary Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Transition Planning
- Oversee a team of five in-office staff and one overseas virtual employee, with plans to add additional remote team members.
- Lead the department with a view to succession, working alongside the retiring manager for a smooth transition.
- Provide ongoing mentorship, structure, and performance management to ensure a high-functioning team.
Accounting Oversight
- Take full ownership of general ledger, A/R, A/P, bank reconciliations, and monthly close processes.
- Ensure accurate and timely delivery of monthly operating reports to clients.
- Maintain and improve internal accounting systems, processes, and controls as the company continues to scale.
Client-Facing Financial Support
- Act as the go-to point of contact for clients regarding financial reports, accounting queries, and general financial matters.
- Collaborate with leadership to maintain a high standard of client communication and service.
Process Improvement & Strategic Input
- Support the transition toward a more scalable accounting structure with increased reliance on virtual staffing.
- Contribute strategic insight into the department's evolution, offering recommendations for tools, automation, and structure improvements.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience; prior leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred.
- Experience in client services or property/real estate accounting is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a team.
- Strong communication skills, both internally and with clients.
- Technologically savvy, with an interest in driving efficiency through systems.
