**Description**

The Assistant Buyer is responsible to assist and partner with the Sr. Buyer(s) to develop and execute the strategy for categories assigned and assist in optimizing the results for the New York/New Jersey area. **This person will work and must reside in the New York and New Jersey area.**

**JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES** (% of time)

**Assortment Building of assigned category (40%)**

* Aid in defining the assortment strategy for assigned categories

* Assist in vendor management to include negotiations, pricing, logistics and the purchase order process

* Review and analyze business reports to understand trends, sell-through and ensure targets are being met

* Manage and own category financials

**Sr. Buyer Support (40%)**

* Obtain and confirm pricing comparison

* Perform competitive shops

* Partner with buyer coordinator, allocator and planner to maximize profitability and sales

* Gain working knowledge of products within the Sr. Buyer accountability

* Build and support vendor relationships

* Analyze item/category performance, trend opportunities and make recommendations to Sr. Buyer

**Training & Division Projects (20%)**

* Training to develop merchandising skills

* Projects as assigned by the DMM

**EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE**

* Bachelors degree in merchandising or business related field preferred

* 1-3 years of experience in other merchandising roles is a plus

**DESIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES**

* Solid understanding of retail math

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

* Demonstrated time management; ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines

* Ability to build strong business partnerships both internally and externally and demonstrate adaptability and flexibility as business strategies change

* Excellent critical thinking, decision making, analytical and negotiation skills

* Strong sense of style and ability to carry out a strategic vision

* Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook required

**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS**

20% - 50% travel may be required, depending on area assigned
