Discover what it's like to be a part of the Fairbanks Morse Defense team here: Assembler This position is responsible for inserting coil windings into stators, rotors, and armatures, ensuring high-quality assembly in accordance with technical specifications. The Assembler is crucial to support the production of motors designed to endure exposure to combat, rigorous shock, and saltwater for decades of use. The Assembler uses finesse, strength, and focus to ensure each motor is built to accommodate the severe duty requirements of the U.S. Navy fleet. Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect stators, rotors, or armatures for defects such as bent laminations, burrs, or unclear slots.
  • Review traveler documents for connection diagrams, winding types, span, inserts, and coil groupings.
  • Install slot liners and insert coils based on the correct span, following all required steps for coil insertion and grouping.
  • Shape coils using a forming fixture (press or mallet) and verify with templates.
  • Solder coil leads using a solder pot, ladles, hand soldering iron, or for smaller gauges, brazing.
  • Apply non-adhesive insulation tape and install additional sleeves, silicone, and moisture blockers.
  • Perform similar coil insertion and shaping tasks for rotors and armatures, ensuring correct slot alignment.
  • Weld coil wires to the commutator using TIG on larger rotors.
  • Install temporary arbors to support and rotate the unit during coil insertion.
  • Inspect work at each stage, ensuring coils meet specifications and are ready for testing or further processing.
  • Label coil wires and ensure the stator is sent for testing once complete.
  • Ensure the finished product meets all specifications before progressing to the next station.
General Duties
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned, including support with setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Resolve most issues encountered during the job, seeking assistance from leaders for more complex problems.
  • Interpret basic drawings and traveler documents, seeking assistance from leaders for complex or new jobs.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Cross train in the Winding Department as required.
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of scrap materials.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and company policies.
Requirements
  • High school diploma preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Able to perform routine math and use measuring tools and gauges.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, with some tasks also performed seated.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, with overhead cranes available for support.
