Salary: Depends on Qualifications Location : Sewanee, TN Job Type: Staff Full-Time Job Number: 202100447 Division: Student Success Department: Student Life - Residential Life Opening Date: 07/03/2025 Position OverviewPrimary Function: Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Residential Life, the Area Coordinator will enhance the residential undergraduate student experience while establishing a respectful, welcoming, safe, and collegial tone in a group of undergraduate residential facilities. The Area Coordinator will oversee multiple residence halls and special interest houses, including student staff supervision, resident support, and facility management. Area Coordinators also assist in hiring, training, developing, and supervising all student staff across the department. As part of playing a crucial role in the development and holistic support of our residents, Area Coordinators assist in critical incident response, low-level student conduct occurring in the residence halls, and CARE case management. Undergraduate student housing at the University serves 98% of the undergraduate student body and includes a variety of options from traditional halls to smaller theme communities. Residential Life is actively working on renovations of three residence halls as part of its campus master plan that was created in collaboration with Sasaki, an international leader in campus planning. Residential Life collaborates frequently with key partners across the university to serve students. Position Appointment Details:

Position Description Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Live on-campus duties required
  • Supervise Proctors (Sewanee's version of Resident Assistants) while assisting with their training, development, recruitment, and selection.
  • Collaborate with other Area Coordinators, the Assistant Director of Residential Education, and Proctors to create a similar and consistent experience in each of the 19 traditional residence halls and special interest houses.
  • Maintain an active presence as a member of the residential community.
  • Serve in an on-call capacity.
  • Assist in housing operation support.
  • Promote and participate in the engagement activity model.
  • Work with others in the division of student life on issues such as academic success, social and community engagement, and ethical behavior.
  • Serve on the CARE team to offer support to students with ongoing challenges.
  • Adjudicate low-level violations of Residential Life Policies cases as a Resolution Facilitator.
  • Support major division and University events as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Machines & Equipment Used: Must be able to drive university vehicles, including vans; lift up to 35 pounds, and move equipment with care and caution for event set up. Judgment Required:Judgment and discretion as to the use of established policies are required to perform the essential duties of this position. Budgetary Responsibility: Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head. Personal Interaction/Communication: Student Contact: Daily contact with residents and Residential Life student staff members Professional Staff Contact: Work primarily with colleagues in the department and the division as appropriate. Masters preferred. Experience: Experience in:
  • Programming, demonstrated leadership in higher education, and previous facilitation of group work, such as residence hall teams.
  • An interest in supporting college-aged students is preferred.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organizational abilities, flexibility, and must exercise good judgment and independent problem-solving ability.
  • Pertinent residential experience and event planning experience preferred.
  • Ability to learn various software quickly.
Job-Related Skills:
  • An interest in, or previous experience with, college-aged students is essential.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, organizational abilities, and flexibility, and must exercise good judgment and independent problem-solving ability.
  • Knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Website content management proficiency is preferred.
  • Pertinent residential experience and event planning experience are preferred.
