Position Description:
- Under general guidance/supervision of AR management or designee to support AR operations in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and policies related to laboratory animals.
- May involve rotational assignments to various animal and/or support areas.
- Functions as a member of a work team, promoting a team-oriented work environment.
- Expected to assist in training others and conduct quality review of records.
- Primary responsibility for animal care and enrichment of routine and specialized animal colonies.
- Perform cleaning and maintenance of associated facilities and equipment, including cage sanitization and preparation for use.
- Responsibilities include animal handling, monitoring animal conditions, reporting abnormal findings, following veterinary directives, and maintaining room conditions.
- Maintain knowledge and proficiency in operating and maintaining animal facility equipment (e.g., cage/rack washers, environmental monitoring equipment).
- May be assigned specialized tasks under the direction of senior technician or AR management.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of task completion; assist in record quality reviews.
- May assist in identifying and evaluating new technologies, equipment, and methodologies to improve the animal program.
- Display behaviors and attributes that support team-based, inter-dependent, and cross-functional work in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain proficiency in general husbandry, facility maintenance, and use of equipment.
- Document tasks related to animal husbandry, facility maintenance, and equipment use in accordance with SOPs and AR management direction.
- Perform visual inspections for quality deficiencies and safety standards during animal and facility inspections.
- Maintain current LOS training records and AALAS registry standing.
- Comply with company policies, SOPs, and Federal, State, and local regulations (e.g., USDA, FDA GLPs), performing work in a safe manner.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience in an animal research facility or veterinary practice required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science or equivalent preferred.
- AALAS certification is highly desirable.
Skills and Requirements:
- No known allergies to animals.
- High degree of physical work effort required, including bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), squatting, pushing/pulling, reaching, and standing for long periods.
- Handling and restraint of small and large laboratory animals.
- Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including uniforms, respiratory, eye, hearing, hand, and foot protection.
- Must be available to work on scheduled weekends and holidays.
