Summary of Duties: Under general direction performs inspection and maintenance of airport facilities regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Caltrans Division of Aeronautics (Caltrans), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the State of California, County of Monterey, City of Salinas, and other regulatory agencies. Receives general supervision from the Senior Airport Maintenance Worker and Airport Operations Supervisor. May exercise supervision over less experienced personnel.Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry-level class in the Airport Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class will usually perform most of the duties required of the Senior Airport Maintenance Worker, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent direction and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods. Must be able to receive direction (written/verbal), work independently, and work unsupervised. Generally, changes in procedures or exceptions are explained in detail as they arise. Essential Job Functions Performs daily, periodic, continuous inspections of facilities, runways, safety areas, wildlife hazards, gates and fencing to ensure the airport is fully operational and faults are coordinated for repairAirfields condition information and disseminates reports through Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and/or other meansInspects, maintains and repairs airfield electrical systems, fixtures and components, gate operators, emergency generators and switch gearMaintains and repairs all airport pavements including asphalt, concrete, and infield surfaces of all types (rock, dirt, road base, etc.)Maintains and repairs perimeter security fences and gatesMaintains all airport owned landscape areas, repairs irrigation systems, and equipmentOperates a variety of airfield maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractor, mowers, forklifts, light vehicles, and pesticide application equipmentPerforms welding duties as neededDisposes of hazardous waste safelyAssists with aircraft and other airport emergenciesCleans and sterilizes restrooms, terminal area, office space, and other areas as neededMust be available to respond to unscheduled/emergency call-insPromotes and maintains safety in the workplacePerforms related duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsKnowledge of:Building maintenance practices and custodial methods and suppliesBasic operation of equipment and hand tools Safe work practices while using tools and equipmentSkill in: Repairing, maintaining, and performing general facility maintenance, including light electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC systemsAbility to: Diagnose discrepancies with accepted standards and conditionsOperate and use a variety of equipment and toolsMaintain effective work relationships with othersEducation: High School Diploma/GED or completion of building trade school Experience: One (1) year of semi-skilled building maintenance or mechanical equipment maintenance experience or completion of a formal apprenticeship program in a related area.Licenses and Certifications: A valid State of California Driver's License. Supplemental InformationPhysical Demands and Working Conditions: Physical mobility and stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time. Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, climb, stoop and reach overhead. Physical strength to shovel dirt and mud, lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds. Manual dexterity sufficient to use hand and power tools. Hearing, speaking, and comprehension ability sufficient to converse over the telephone and over aviation radios with Air Traffic Control Tower, to detect and describe noises in machinery or to hear running water. Vision sufficient to read fine printed materials on labels, manuals, diagrams, to work with color-coded wires with no color deficiencies, and to drive. Detect odors. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.Perform manual labor for periods up to but not limited to 8 hours per day. Work with potentially dangerous chemicals including used oils, gasoline, hydraulic fluids, and sewage waste.
