Job Summary:A bus monitor is a person who, generally under the direction of a bus driver, rides in a van or bus over designated routes transporting school pupils or clients to and from school or other designated locations. In addition, a bus monitor may ride a bus or van to assist and monitor clients on private charter trips. Bus monitors may work with loud and disruptive clients. Monitors may also work with special needs individuals.Duties/Responsibilities:Monitor pupils and daily school bus activities to always ensure proper conduct, and adherence to proper and safe standards on the busMaintain attendance and ridership records and assign seating, as necessary, to ensure good student behaviorObserve and learn established bus routes so when substitute drivers are operating the bus directional and routing assistance can be givenAs requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher, verify route turn for turn sheets and note any route changes with written notesAs requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher, make additional directional or landmark notations on bus route sheets to assist future new or substitute bus driversAs requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher, observe and track route timing, such as total time in route; time between stops, loading and unloading times or any other requested information for the purpose of establishing route efficiencyEnsure safe loading and unloading of students on and off the busAs required, verify student use of seat belts and assist with securing or removing belts.Assist bus driver with sweeping and cleaning bus interiorEstablish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with bus drivers, district personnel, students, and parentsAll other duties as assignedRequired Skills/Abilities-Essential Functions:Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructionsAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workersAbility to communicate clearly with students, drivers, school officials, and parentsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to heat, cold, wet and/or humid weather conditionsThe noise level in the work environment is moderately loudAttend work on a regular and dependable basisAbility to successfully pass state and/or federal required Background ChecksAbility to perform the essential functions of the jobAbility to comply with all policies and procedures established by companyEducation and Experience:High School Diploma or equivalentMust be at least 18 years of ageValid driver's license with a clean driving historyCertificate of training in first aid and CPR, if required by local contractA first aid endorsement of the special driver's certificate or a certificate of training in first aid and a certificate of training for CPR, if required by local contractPhysical Requirements with Examples: Getting on and off the vehicle to assist challenged ridersIn parking lots, in aisles on board bus, walk around vehicle for daily inspections Closing door, pushing wheelchairs, opening emergency door and equipment opening and closing windowsOpening and closing doors as well as operating all hand and foot controls, checking bus fluids Secure themselves correctly in the factory-installed driver's seat belt unassisted. Turning the steering wheel, shifting the transmission. Driving a bus. Secure themselves correctly in the factory-installed driver's seat belt unassisted. Announcing streets, talking with passengers, or speaking on the radio. Keeping aware of general traffic conditions, stopped vehicles, traffic signals, viewing color or traffic lights, inspecting vehicle, monitoring passengers. Listening to traffic sounds, emergency vehicles, passenger inquiries, monitor radio, detect mechanical problems. Stooping / StretchingPicking up and securing young or challenged passengers, securing wheelchairs, inspecting under the bus. Supervising passenger boarding and exiting, operating lift controls. Lifting challenged passengers into their seats, wheelchairs and other equipment; assisting passengers in an emergency to evacuate the bus, lifting hood to perform pre-trip inspection and installation of tire chains Assist students in simulated and real emergency evacuation situations.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.
