P.S. 173 Middle School serves recent arrivals from Spanish-speaking countries. The program is focused on leadership, STEM and academics with students in the sixth to eighth grade. Students engage in beat building, sports, theater, LitMentors, art and cooking.POSITION OVERVIEW:Group Leaders are responsible for academic tutoring and assisting lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in STEM, leadership, sports and the arts.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Organize, lead, and promote the students' interest and participation in the activities offered by the program.
- Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning, and serve as a role model to students, always professionally conducting yourself and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
- Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students
- Promote positive character development.
- Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth.
- Supervise groups of students while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health.
- Closely coordinate with Program Director and coworkers for any programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns.
- Participate in staff meetings, program evaluations, program improvement, and professional development sessions throughout the school year.
- Provide other program support as needed.
COMPENSATION:
- Work paid at $18 an hour.
POSITION TYPE / EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
- Part-time position
- You are available to work Monday-Friday, 1:30 pm - 6 pm (15-22.5 hours per week) with room for flexibility.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong academic skills and knowledge of New York state standards and test preparation.
- Genuine interest in working with culturally diverse 6th-8th Grade students, and able to promote positive character development.
- A sincere desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth.
- Well-organized, reliable, and punctual.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Comfortable to learn and model universal Jewish values while working in and with a large, diverse population.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma.
- Experience working with youth in a classroom, afterschool, or community-based environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's, Associate, or degree in progress.
- Experience using a positive youth development model.
WORK AUTHORIZATION & CLEARANCE:
- Documentation of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S.
- Must pass the background check, medical exams, fingerprinting and other requirements of the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DOE), and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
