Description The Public Works Department's Administration Division is the primary support division for the four operational divisions within the department. The administration staff's primary responsibilities include clerical, accounting, contract, construction, program, project management, and technical support. An hourly salary range of $15.48 to $17.99 is anticipated for this position.Examples of Duties The duties listed below are not all that may be assigned but are those that are considered essential for an employee to perform.
  • Enter all of the trucks for MSW, Yard Waste, or C&D into the computer, and upon exiting, give them a receipt to show the weight in tons and the dollar amount. Anyone without an account number must be entered under a different code, and upon exiting the landfill, they pay with cash, check, or credit cards. Change must be correctly given and accounted for at the end of the day.
  • Spot-check trucks with our camera or by going outside to look into the trailer. It's true!< bed. Look for hazardous waste, paint, leaking loads of sludge, and any other materials not accepted at our facility. Communicate with operators regarding disposal, special wastes, or operations.
  • Answer telephone calls about landfill procedures and recycling questions: direct callers and visitors to appropriate areas. Provide information for customers regarding policy and procedures, rates, etc. Take messages for supervisors and co-workers as needed. Order copy paper, check sundries, and give a list to the appropriate personnel.
  • Make appointments for used tires so dealers and haulers can get rid of old tires. Direct interested persons to the appropriate contacts in Raleigh when seeking hauler certification. Call to order tire trailers so our operations can run smoothly without interrupting our customers.
  • Provide and do credit checks on new applications for landfill accounts. Issue permit stickers for new accounts showing their numbers. This is how we enter accounts into our computer. Keep a record of the date opened, the account number, and the new customer's name for future reference. Watch trucks coming in to ensure a permit sticker is visible and legible.
  • Community service workers are sent here to do their service hours, and this entails keeping a log of each one's hours and time worked, plus sending a weekly time sheet to the Community Service Office each Monday with total hours. Offenders who do not show up before the due date are kept in a separate folder, and their staff is notified.
  • Managing the till for daily operations, reconciling the till at the end of the day, and ordering changes as needed. Returned deposits from our daily banking have to be logged in as returned, stapled to the copy, and then the pink copy is sent to Finance.
  • Make an appointment to accept special wastes such as fluorescent tubes, paint, and mobile homes.
  • Put general landfill, State, and Administrative information on our board for all employees to see. Make sure copies are available upon request. Post changes in dollar amount on disposal, new procedures, and holiday closings. Make sure monthly folders are made up for reports, checks, and tire aQQOintments. Deposits and daily reports run each night.
  • If the recycling coordinator is unavailable, assist in selling garb cards. Take cash or a check and a receipt and keep them for posting. Work with the Recycling Coordinator on any problems or questions customers or our recycling center personnel may have, or direct them to the appropriate area so help can be obtained in a timely manner.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED with six months of clerical or accounts payable experience
  • An associate's or bachelor's degree may be substituted for the six months of experience.
