Long Island University Brooklyn is seeking a dynamic and experienced Improv Instructor to join our BFA Acting for Theatre, Film & Television adjunct faculty.The ideal candidate will have a strong background in improvisational theater and performance, with experience both as a performer and educator. In addition, the candidate will be well-versed in current trends in Improvisation, and will have recent Improv performance experience on their resume. This position involves teaching students the fundamentals of improvisation, including spontaneity, collaboration, character development, and scene work, while fostering creativity and confidence in a supportive learning environment.Key Responsibilities
- Teach introductory improv courses to First Year BFA Acting undergraduate students.
- Develop engaging lesson plans, exercises, and performance opportunities that enhance students' improv skills.
- Instruct students in core improv principles, including “Yes, And” thinking, active listening, quick thinking, and ensemble work.
- Encourage students to take creative risks and develop their sense of freedom to fail.
- Provide constructive feedback and individual mentorship to students.
- Stay current with industry trends and integrate contemporary improv techniques into the curriculum.
Qualifications
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Theater, Performance Studies, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
- Significant experience in improvisational theater, both as a performer, and as an instructor.
- Knowledge of various improv styles, including short-form and long-form improvisation.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills.
- A passion for teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience teaching at the college or university level.
- Connections to the professional improv and comedy scene.
