Job Description: The American Studies Department at SUNY Old Westbury seeks to hire an adjunct instructor to teach AS3842 African Americans and Mass Media in the Spring 2024 semester. The American Studies Department offers an interdisciplinary B.A. degree in American Studies, B.A. degree in Media and Communications, and B.A. degree in Black Studies. This course meets elective requirements for all three majors.Candidates for adjunct positions should have a record of high-quality teaching in support of the College Mission.We are seeking applicants who can teach AS3842 African Americans and Mass Media. The course description includes: Examines the participation of African-Americans in the development of mass media in the U.S. by looking at newspapers, magazines, books, radio, records, movies, and television. The course will explore the viewpoints of African-Americans through the mass media, how they are presented and represented, and how the white-owned media influences African-American images. Additional teaching opportunities may include other courses in Black Studies or Media Studies.This course will be offered in person, on campus. SUNY Old Westbury offers students, faculty and staff a shuttle bus to campus from the Hicksville Long Island Railroad station. Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a Master's degree American Studies, Black Studies, Media Studies, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or ABD in American Studies, Black Studies, Media Studies, or a related field.
  • Previous experience teaching at the college level.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring an ethnically diverse, working student population.
