Job Description Purpose of Position: Plans organizes and implements Therapeutic Recreation programs based on patients' assessed needs and interests, reflecting culture, leisure history, current interest, and present abilities/limitations. Participates in planning and implementing a medical/psychiatric-approved Recreation program of individual and unit activities adapted to patients' needs, interests, and capacities. Participates in meetings with treatment staff to coordinate effective patient care and participates as a team member, in patient groups. Develop a treatment plan for every patient based on the assessment Plans individualized schedules including activities of daily living, arts, and therapy and socialization to meet the specific needs of patients. Teaches and leads recreational activities such as group and team games, arts and crafts, dances, gymnastics, art in therapy, poetry, simple forms of music, and dramatics to the Emergency room, Pediatric, and inpatient Psychiatric units. Directs learning experiences as part of the care/treatment of patients to influence behavioral changes leading to increased experience and comprehension of self and environment. Works with and may guide students from multi-disciplines, volunteers, and others assigned to the area of service. Attends and contributes to departmental meetings, and attends and conducts in-service training programs. Works with private and public organizations to further recreational programs. May co-lead or lead small group therapy and other discussion groups. May co-lead community meetings with other members of various disciplines. Communicates observations of patients in activity therapy to the team. Documents in the electronic medical record, Activity Therapy Progress Notes. Develop, and implement a monthly schedule of therapeutic and leisure programs on assigned unit Prepares periodic reports and keeps appropriate records. Is responsible for maintaining and ordering supplies and equipment for assigned units. Provide the activities functions described above, to psychiatric patients housed in other units in the hospital, such as pediatrics, emergency services, and the psychiatric inpatient unit. May be asked to contribute to developing policies, procedures, and protocols for the department through a committee. Supervised level one staff. Other duties assigned Minimum Qualifications 1. A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by eighteen credits required in Recreation, Physical Education, Dance, Fine Arts, Applied Arts (including Therapy) and twelve credits in Psychology, Social Psychology, Sociology, Group Work, Group Dynamics and/or related fields, and one year experience as a Recreational Activity Therapist in a hospital or health care setting or related field; or, 2.
