About The Role

The Accounting Manager will be a key member of the accounting team, responsible for leading various accounting operations within a dynamic software company. Additionally, this role will focus on establishing and maintaining a smooth and efficient month-end close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting that aligns with the needs and rhythm of the business. This role requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred), and the ability to identify procedural risks and drive process improvements.

This role may be hybrid in our NYC headquarters, or remote in one of our approved hiring states (see below). Eastern region/time zone is strongly preferred, but we may consider the Central region/time zone.

What You Will Do
  • Month End Close
  • Execute month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Prepare and review assigned balance sheet reconciliations following month-end close.
  • Ensure the balance sheet is clean and optimized for proper balance sheet forecasting; clear up issues and variances within the balance sheet as required.
  • Process and reconcile inter-company journal entries.
  • Financial Statements and Reporting
    • Assist with the preparation of consolidated financial statements, including the income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows, ensuring accuracy and compliance with US GAAP.
    • Collaborate with the Controller and Financial Systems Manager to review, update, optimize, and standardize the BrainPOP chart of accounts.
    • Ensure accurate reporting of results internally and externally in line with timetables, policies and procedures.
    • Process and reconcile inter-company journal entries.
    • Analyze financial data and provide insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Treasury
    • Ensure all cash management and treasury activities are performed and reviewed, including monitoring cash balances, ensuring cash is reconciled in line with Group policy and procedures, and preparing regular cash forecasts accurately.
    • Prepare weekly AR and AP schedules for weekly review by CFO to ensure timely payment and collections
    • Support financial planning and forecasting activities as it pertains to cash
  • Technical Accounting
    • Interpret and apply complex US GAAP standards; handle intricate accounting issues with confidence and clarity.
    • Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Accounting Technology
    • Lead or support ERP system implementations and optimizations; optimize and automate NetSuite and other accounting systems to align to industry and company best practices.
    • Identify and implement operational efficiencies across accounting functions, including accounts payable, collections, and payroll.
  • Corporate Tax
    • Prepare for and manage corporate tax returns, working closely with external tax firm.
    • Assist with BrainPOP's sales tax compliance initiative. Assure related filings and remittances are properly accounted for to reduce sales tax exposure.

    • Analytical and solution driven; manage complex functional task or analyses with consideration of short and long term business objectives and impact
    On Your Resume
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
    • Active CPA required.
    • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a senior accounting role within SaaS; understanding of ASC 606 revenue recognition and deferred commissions
    • Experience coaching and mentoring teammates on accounting best practices and providing project leadership on team initiatives
    • Proven experience with accounting systems; NetSuite is a definite plus.
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
    • Knowledgeable corporate tax return preparation and management.
    • Advanced fluency with Excel (or Google Sheets); VLookup, pivot tables, etc.

    The BrainPOP team operates in a hybrid work environment: Each role has remote flexibility and an in-person component at our New York headquarters or other meeting locations. Based on the requirements of a specific position, we may prioritize hiring within a commutable distance of our New York headquarters or in another region relevant to that role.
