Job Summary

The mission of the Institute for Social Research (ISR), the premier university based social science research institute in the world, includes the development, conduct, and dissemination of ground-breaking social science research, as well as the training of future generations of social scientists. ISR research and training is conducted through the efforts of more than 300 faculty and 500 regular staff within five distinct research centers.

The salary range for this position is $45,000-$55,000 (full-time), commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities*

This position reports to the Accounting Unit Supervisor. Major Responsibilities include:

Procurement processing

  • Review and initial approval of procurement charges for ISR, including Emburse Enterprise reports, travel and hosting reimbursements, and payment requests, making sure they meet the appropriate guidelines and that we have proper support for the expenditures

  • Audit/review Pcard and expense reports, which includes making sure they meet ISR, University, and Sponsored Program guidelines

  • Review and approve the processing of expense reports and payments to ISR field staff who mostly work offsite to U/M in the field doing interviews

  • Process PeoplePay requests for payments to consultants and independent contractors

  • Prepare monthly Emburse report for Business Office ghost card, and for others in ISR as needed

  • Advise/Consult/Problem Solve for procurement and vendor payments for ISR Centers who do not have this expertise internally.Help process invoices for payment

Respondent Payments

  • Process all check requests from studies and print checks using ISR internal check-writing system

  • Transmit check file to bank

  • Log returned checks for studies to pick up

  • Hand out imprest cash (already prepared) to studies

Cash Receipts and Accounts Receivable

  • Process all cash receipts (cash, checks, credit cards) for ISR including travel advance reimbursements, Summer Program fees, Data Access fees, and duplicating funds.May include the need to walk to local bank branch office

  • Update Travel Advance and Credit Card databases for cash receipt activity

  • Obtain customer numbers and prepare miscellaneous invoices for ISR accounts receivable

Other Tasks

  • Create, process, and post ISR Journal Entries into U/M system

  • Open/close project grants as requested by entering appropriate information into the U/M system

  • Monitor ISR Accounting group email inbox

  • Special projects as assigned by Supervisors

  • Review website (intranet) for correctness

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of 1 year of successful accounting/finance work experience

  • Excellent communication and organization skills

  • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities

  • Proven customer service and leadership competencies

  • Examples of proficiency in the use of Excel

  • Strong analytical skills

Successful candidate will provide evidence of how experience fulfills the requirements of this position.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous relevant working experience in higher education in accounting or finance

  • Familiarity with University accounting systems and experience using reports in Business Objects, MPathways, and ISR templates to initiate, process, and review financial activities

  • Experience working with third party accounting software such as Emburse Enterprise and Upland

  • Experience with internal controls and audits

Work Locations
