The primary purpose of academic advisor is to support and guide students throughout their academic journey. Academic advisors play a crucial role in enhancing student success and ensuring a positive and productive educational experience.
Academic advisors serve as a resource to all prospective and current students within the college (undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate). They are required to be familiar with overall department of education and board of trustees policies and procedures that govern the matriculation process (e.g., general education, Gordon Rule, transfer admissions requirements, registration processes, class scheduling, graduation, etc.) as well as appropriate student referral sources (e.g., academic support services, career services) to facilitate student success. Academic advisors perform the following duties:
The academic advisor position requires exceptional self-motivation and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a diverse population. Must possess a professional demeanor and be receptive to change as the university and department grows. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
General supervision. The incumbent develops procedures for performing a variety of complex duties within established guidelines; has considerable freedom while the work is in process and receives instructions on new assignments.
Assist director with writing, training, and administering policy and procedures for academic advising.
Initiates contact with students, faculty, and staff of the university on an as needed basis. Contact with parents, potential students, and partners in the community as appropriate.
Maintains the confidentiality of student records.
Required qualifications: a Master's degree from an acceptable accredited institution in a directly related area of specialization; or a Bachelor's degree from an acceptable accredited institution and two years of experience directly related to the job functions.
