Position Title: IT Engineer IIDepartment: Information TechnologyReports To: Assistant Director of IT - Infrastructure and SecurityJOB DEFINITION: The IT Engineer II is responsible for the design, implementation, automation, security, and support of the district's systems, networks, and telecommunications. Operating with a security-first mindset and limited supervision, this role ensures reliable, high-performing infrastructure, sets technical standards, and serves as a mentor and resource across the district. The IT Engineer II requires a well-rounded skill set, with proven, real-world experience managing and supporting large enterprise networks, strong scripting and automation skills along with deep expertise in multiple key domains. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop and maintain scripts, tools, and automation to support system and network operations.
  • Design and manage centralized monitoring, logging, and alerting for system visibility and uptime.
  • Implement backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and continuity.
  • Lead or contribute to IT projects, including planning, resource coordination, and communication.
  • Maintain documentation, procedures, and training materials for systems and workflows.
  • Install and configure servers, networking gear, and related infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot complex system, network, and application issues; provide Tier 3 support.
  • Collaborate with team members, vendors, and external partners to deliver IT services.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with users and team members.
  • Apply and enforce IT best practices, policies, and industry standards.
  • Monitor infrastructure performance and respond to alerts or risks proactively.
  • Mentor team members in tools, techniques, and operational standards.
  • Meet performance expectations and maintain professional conduct.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The IT Engineer II provides 24/7 support for critical IT systems, which may require after-hours, weekend, or on-call work. Travel to school sites, vendor meetings, and training sessions is required. The role involves working around electrical systems, RF signals, and high-noise environments. Physical requirements include lifting and maneuvering equipment up to 50 pounds.The position requires reliable transportation for travel to various work sites, meetings, and training sessions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge:
  • Systems and Network Scripting & Automation: Proven ability to automate system and network tasks to improve accuracy, efficiency, and reliability. Experience with scripting for configuration management, deployments, and third-party integrations.
  • Enterprise Systems Administration: Manage and support Windows/Linux systems, including patching, tuning, automation, troubleshooting, backups, and cloud/virtualization integration.
  • Networking: Administer and troubleshoot enterprise networks with routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, NAC, and identity-based access. Skilled in packet analysis and resolving complex network issues.
  • Wireless Networking: Deploy and maintain wireless networks with WLCs, access points, RF tuning, authentication, and high-density performance optimization.
  • Virtualization: Deploy, manage, and optimize virtual environments in high-availability enterprise settings.
  • Directory Services: Administer Active Directory, related authentication protocols (LDAP, SAML, OIDC, OAuth, Kerberos), and GPOs across hybrid environments.
  • PKI: Manage certificate authorities, automate certificate lifecycles, and support enterprise authentication, encryption, and code signing.
  • Network Security: Configure and manage NGFWs with decryption, filtering, inspection, threat prevention, and custom signatures.
  • Enterprise Storage: Support SAN, NAS, and distributed storage for availability, scalability, and performance.
  • Email & Messaging: Administer Exchange and Microsoft 365, including security standards (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), filtering, relay config, and mail flow troubleshooting.
  • VoIP & Telephony: Manage unified communications systems, SIP trunking, PSTN trunking, call routing, voicemail, and conferencing.
  • Monitoring & Logging: Implement centralized monitoring, log aggregation, alerts, and dashboards for proactive system management.
  • Backup & Recovery: Design and manage backups for continuity and disaster recovery. Experience with retention, replication, and restoration across environments.
  • Web Technologies: Knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and AJAX for system integration and troubleshooting.
  • Database Management: Experience with SQL-based systems for data integration, performance tuning, and backend support.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, a related field, OR equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in large-scale enterprise IT engineering, system administration, network management OR equivalent experience.
  • Proven track record of using automation and scripting to streamline IT operations, reduce manual tasks, and improve consistency and reliability.
Preferred:
  • Industry certifications (e.g., Cisco, Microsoft, VMware, AWS, Linux).
  • Experience in K-12 or higher education IT environments.
