We are currently recruiting for a caring and committed SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil in a primary school in Plymouth. This is a rewarding opportunity to provide meaningful support to a child with complex needs while they await a transition to a specialist provision.

About the Role

You will be working on a one-to-one basis with a pre-verbal Year 1 pupil who is not currently accessing the mainstream curriculum. The pupil requires a highly individualised approach to learning and support, with a focus on communication, emotional regulation and sensory needs.

Your responsibilities will include:

Supporting the pupil’s communication using visual aids, Makaton, or other alternative communication methodsCreating a calm, predictable and nurturing environment to help the pupil feel safe and engagedAssisting with sensory regulation, including identifying triggers and implementing strategies to support emotional wellbeingEncouraging social interaction and play-based learning, adapted to the pupil’s developmental stageWorking closely with the class teacher, SENCO and external professionals to follow and adapt an individualised learning plan

The Ideal Candidate

Experience supporting children with speech and language delays, autism spectrum conditions or other developmental needsFamiliarity with alternative communication strategies such as PECS, Makaton or AACA patient, empathetic and resilient approachAbility to work collaboratively with school staff and external agenciesRelevant qualifications or training in SEN support are desirable but not essential
