Overview

Genesee County 9-1-1 Central Dispatch is seeking dedicated and highly motivated individuals to serve as Public Safety Telecommunicators. This position plays a critical role in receiving, evaluating, and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and emergency medical services. Candidates must thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment while delivering exceptional public service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Answer all incoming 9-1-1 calls from citizens in Genesee County.
• Determine appropriate agency responses and refer non-emergency calls to other departments.
• Gather pertinent information, determine the appropriate call type, and dispatch appropriate emergency services.
• Provide Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD) when appropriate.
• Dispatch police, fire, and ambulance services using a multi-channel radio console.
• Provide pre-arrival instructions until emergency services arrive.
• Maintain awareness of unit locations and status checks.
• Monitor multiple radio channels.
• Effectively manage and prioritize multiple incidents at once.
• Provide resources to public safety personnel.
• Enter, retrieve, and update information accurately within the computer-aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
• Perform LEIN Queries (e.g. persons, vehicles, etc.) through Michigan's Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) data files.
• Perform such other related duties as directed by higher authority.

General Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor, Deputy Director, or Director, Public Safety Telecommunicators are responsible for answering and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency service calls. Public Safety Telecommunicators are responsible for gathering vital information from callers and dispatching the appropriate emergency services: police, fire, and EMS. This role supports emergency operations across Genesee County, covering 31 communities served by 26 police agencies, 19 fire departments, and 4 ambulance services. Telecommunicators play a critical role by accurately retrieving, entering, and relaying information to first respondersensuring timely assistance, protecting lives, and safeguarding our communities.

Hours consist of a 12-hour shift (rotating week schedule) with every other weekend off. Must be available to work night shift, some holidays and overtime.

Employment Qualifications

• Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years of age.
• Have a valid Driver's License.

Experience

• Not required, but preferred.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent is required, PST7 Course Certification or any courses in emergency dispatch communications is preferred.

Other Requirements

• Candidates must successfully pass a data entry/keyboarding test, criminal background check, drug screening, and psychological evaluation.

Applicants should demonstrate strong keyboarding skills, the ability to follow policies and procedures, and a commitment to high performance standards. The ideal candidate will be capable of multitasking in a high-pressure environment, spelling accurately, and communicating clearly and concisely in English. They must exercise sound judgment, think quickly, and possess strong interpersonal and public relations skills. Additionally, candidates should be able to work independently or collaboratively and retain critical information for later recall.

Physical Requirements:

• Must have the ability to see and interpret information on computer screens for timely and accurate data entry, and possess sufficient hearing to communicate effectively with callers, respond to radio transmissions, and interact with coworkers in a busy work environment.
• Finger and wrist dexterity suitable for typing, keying data into computers.
• Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time.
• Reaching and use of reference books, and manuals.
• Movement from one workstation to another quickly.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously

Working Conditions:

• Office environment consists of shared work areas.
• Above average level of noise level at times due to busy work environment.
