Custodian - Part Time

Job Summary: Responsible for keeping assigned areas clean, sanitary by scouring, scrubbing, mopping, polishing, using germicidal disinfectants and damp dusting. Performs other duties as listed in Essential Duties and Responsibilities. Keeps work station neat and clean. Uses specialized equipment as required.

Job Duties:

  • Completes assignments and duties and is responsible for cleanliness and aseptic conditions of assigned areas.
  • Operates floor machines to perform the following floor projects: clean and buff floors, strip and wax floors and carpet maintenance vacuuming shampooing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set appropriate work priorities.
  • Proper use of all equipment and materials used in daily assignments.
  • Capable of removing and cleaning vents, light shades, and windows.
  • Uses correct dilution of all chemicals/cleaning products.
  • Perform cycle cleaning projects or extra cleaning such as wall washing, window washing, change cubicles or window curtains, floor care, etc.
  • Completes work orders for any areas needing repairs as seen during your day to day activities.
  • Completes paperwork as required.
  • Inventories and orders supplies.
  • Answers calls as needed.
  • Makes decisions in emergency situations.
  • Trains new staff as needed.
  • Uses laundry equipment to properly wash rags, mops, cubicles, etc.
  • Will be assigned to interchange with staff and positions as posted on schedule. Scheduling is determined by cleaning of facilities or the need to cover positions.
  • Complete quality control check sheets as assigned.
  • Collects soiled linen or distribute clean linen, as needed, and is required to handle properly.
  • Cleans discharge / transfer units properly.
  • Enters preceptor code in badge reader system.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Specific Job Demands:

  • Strength: Heavy Work - Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling 50 - 100 Lbs. occasionally, 20 - 50 Lbs. frequently, 10 - 20 Lbs. constantly.
  • Climbing: Occasionally - Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet, and legs or hands and arms. Body agility is important.
  • Stooping: Frequently - Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling: Frequently - Bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching: Frequently - Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
  • Reaching: Frequently - Extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Handling: Frequently - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand, such as to turn a switch or shift automobile gears.
  • Talking: Occasionally - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing: Occasionally - Perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.
  • Near Acuity: Occasionally - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Tenth grade education or equivalent. High school diploma/GED preferred.
  • Previous healthcare and / or institutional Environmental Service experience preferred. Prior experience with specialized floor cleaning equipment preferred.
  • Must be able to read and write and follow written and oral directions.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with other members of the healthcare team, customers, and guests.
  • Requires judgment and alertness.
  • The ability to organize time, prioritize, and concentrate.
  • Must have experience using computers and computer software programs.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal patient care/hospital environment. A large part of work time is standing or walking. Subject to certain distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases. May be exposed to potential hazards such as chemicals, body wastes, fluids and other possible infectious material.
