Sr. Director of Nursing Operations

Position Summary: The Director of Nursing - Operations over-sees nursing staff and overall 24-hour nursing operations at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH), which includes the ED, Medsurg, ICU, Detox, Rehab, Psychiatry Nursing Units and Nursing Supervision. Oversight includes evaluating and directing all nursing employees, establishing goals for the nursing department and creating and enforcing quality metrics and compliant healthcare policies to meet regulatory requirements that is evidence informed. Additionally, the Senior Director of Nursing - Operations ensures adequate and competent nursing staff service and nursing leadership at all levels. The Senior Director of Nursing - Operations provides positive, strengths-based leadership and mentorship to the senior nursing group, including nurse managers and nursing supervisors/administrative coordinators, and administrative staff within the nursing department.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

• Direct, supervise and evaluate performance of nursing staff.
• Develop and execute staffing plans, forecasts, and procedures.
• Creates and maintains a positive, educational, and supportive culture.
• Provide oversight for unit nursing staffing schedules (24-hours a day, seven days a week).
• Oversee SBELIHs Comprehensive Stroke Certification program and ensure compliance with all associated standards.
• Set objectives and long-term goals for self and departments the post holder oversees, based on best available evidence, and local regulatory/practice needs.
• Determine and track quality and regulatory metrics based on operational and strategic needs.
• Make reports and present identified quality and regulatory metrics.
• Establish collaboration and build long-term relationships with relevant departments Create and present reports and presentations to senior managers.

Required Education & Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
• Licensed and currently registered to practice professional nursing in New York State.
• Baccalaureate in Nursing or health related field required.
• Masters in nursing or health related field, or equivalent experience and Masters to be completed in two (2) years.
• MBA and/or Doctorate in Nursing or related field preferred.
• Commitment to continuing professional development.
• BLS/CPT/ ACLS required.
• ANCC or equivalent Specialty Nursing credentials preferred (e.g. PMH, CCRN, NEA).
• Five (5) years of post-licensure acute care hospital experience required.
• Substantial clinical nursing experience in at least two of the following nursing specialties: addiction medicine, ER, critical care, neuro (specifically stroke care), and medical surgical.
• Three (3) years of progressive leadership required.
• Community Hospital nursing experience preferred.
• Knowledge of hospital budgeting and financial reporting.
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Teaching experience preferred.
• Proficient at using computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

• Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning and physical interventions, if needed.
• Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, with the use of appropriate safety techniques and equipment.
• Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care.
• Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression.
• Proving physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary.
• Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision.
• Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment.
• Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends.
• Capacity to manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capacity.
• Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises.
• Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patient in a crisis situation.
• These physical demands are tailored to the nature of the job, which requires a high level of alertness, physical engagement, and responsiveness, especially when dealing with patients in acute psychiatric distress.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBEILHs good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

• Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
