Marketing Statement

This is beginning level fieldwork inspecting houses and other residential buildings for conformance with rehabilitation standards, housing and building codes, and related ordinances. Employees in this class perform the less complex inspections or assist a higher-level inspector in complex inspections. As experience is gained the employee is expected to assume full responsibility for the more difficult inspections.

Annual salary: $54,895.12

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade; Two years of inspectional and/or investigational work, one year of which has included gathering facts, by inquiry, observation and examinations; or two years of apprentice experience in one of the recognized building construction trades; Or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the methods, materials, practices and principles used in building construction and alteration; Some knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the inspection of residential dwellings and in locating and evaluating sub-standard living conditions; Some knowledge of federal housing standards, local housing and dwelling codes and related ordinances; Ability to enforce codes, ordinances and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

Responsibilities

Assists a higher-level inspector in the inspection of rehabilitated housing or houses in the process of being rehabilitated; Makes preliminary inspections of properties to determine overall safety and suitability for rehabilitation; Completes inspection reports describing conditions found; Makes recommendations for further inspections and re-inspects to determine if conditions have been corrected.
