Job Summary

Manages the daily operations of the Allied Healthcare Professional Insurance underwriting unit including planning, prioritizing, directing the workflow, acting as a resource for questions, and interfacing with Senior Management. Utilizes subject-matter expert experience of the Allied Healthcare and Social Services Professional Liability product lines to develop underwriters and grow the book profitably.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of underwriters, provide training, and review referrals to support meeting underwriting unit goals.
  • Serve as a resource to departmental staff with regards to underwriting procedures, departmental guidelines, and industry trends and developments.
  • Review claims and loss trends to make recommendations on rate and coverage changes.
  • Review new and renewal policy applications; manage risk associated with policy underwriting.
  • Ensure unit meets established guidelines and adheres to all company policy and procedures by reviewing the work of underwriters and providing developmental feedback.
  • Provide higher level of underwriting approval or denial for the department. Authority to approve special policy conditions, create manuscript endorsements, or negotiate commissions.
  • Design, review, and recommend policies, processes, procedures, and rules to meet internal and external reporting requirements, improve operation efficiency, and safeguard corporate assets. Plan and execute implementation.
  • Cultivate relationships with internal and external contacts to facilitate the underwriting process, promote business development, and to remain abreast of industry trends.
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert and primary point of contact for all matters of operations-related technology innovations and implementations for all projects assigned to them.

  • People ManagementHas full HR responsibility for direct reports including making hiring decisions, training, coordinating work, establishing standards, reviewing work, conducting performance appraisals, and providing coaching or counseling.
Required

Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU), or equivalent insurance designation and/or experience depending on specialty area.

Experience

8-10+ years of relevant and progressive experience in specialty or related area that includes a strong working knowledge of state insurance laws. 6+ years of experience in a leadership role. Regular travel (up to 25% of time).
