Principal Associate, Data Scientist

In this role, you will

• Partner with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver a product customers love
• Leverage a broad stack of technologies — Python, Conda, AWS, H2O, Spark, and more — to reveal insights within large volumes of numeric and textual data
• Build machine learning models through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation
• Translate the complexity of your work into tangible business goals by leveraging strong interpersonal skills

• Technical. You are comfortable with open‑source languages and develop data science solutions using open‑source tools and cloud platforms
• Statistically‑minded. You've built and validated models, backtested them, and understand metrics like confusion matrices and ROC curves; experience with clustering, classification, sentiment analysis, time series, and deep learning
• A data guru. You can retrieve, combine, and analyze data from diverse sources and structures, and understand that data comprehension is key to great data science

Basic Qualifications

• A Bachelor's Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related) plus 5 years of data analytics experience
• A Master's Degree in a quantitative field (or MBA with quantitative concentration) plus 3 years of data analytics experience
• A PhD in a quantitative field

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in STEM plus 3 years of data analytics experience, or PhD in STEM
• At least 1 year of experience working with AWS
• At least 3 years' experience in Python, Scala, or R
• At least 3 years' experience with machine learning
• At least 3 years' experience with SQL

Salary and Location

The minimum and maximum full‑time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries refer to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part‑time roles will be prorated based on hours worked.

McLean, VA: $158,600 - $181,000 for Principal Associate, Data Science

Richmond, VA: $144,200 - $164,600 for Principal Associate, Data Science

New York, NY: $173,000 - $197,400 for Principal Associate, Data Science

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered will be reflected in the offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
