Director, Software Engineering (AWS, React, GenAI) – Travelers

Join Travelers as a Director of Software Engineering to lead end-to-end software engineering efforts across multiple systems, drive technical leadership, and mentor a team of software engineers. This role focuses on building cloud-native solutions using AWS and React, leveraging GenAI where appropriate, and aligning engineering work with business objectives.

What Is the Opportunity?

Travelers is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead advanced software engineering tasks that span designing, developing, configuring, testing, debugging, documenting, monitoring, and implementing solutions based on user or system specifications. You will consult with users to determine requirements, manage resources, act as a subject matter expert across multiple applications and technologies, drive planning and execution of complex initiatives, provide technical leadership, and lead a team of software engineers.

What Will You Do?
  • Lead and mentor software engineering teams, fostering collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement while modeling Travelers\' leadership behaviors.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to advance engineering practices and align with business objectives.
  • Collaborate with business and architecture stakeholders to ensure alignment of engineering efforts with organizational goals.
  • Ensure robustness, scalability, and security of software solutions, focusing on non-functional requirements.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, provide technical insights, and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Develop and implement solutions leveraging AI tools and frameworks to build intelligent systems.
  • Lead complex design, development, analysis, configuration, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, documenting, health monitoring/alerting, and implementation based on user or system specifications for high-visibility tasks.
  • Lead investigation and resolution efforts for critical, high-impact problems, defects, and incidents.
  • Identify opportunities where technology can improve the business and streamline processes.
  • Apply current industry trends to formulate solutions for software engineering problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
  • 5 years of related experience, including insurance/financial services industry experience.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications using AWS, React, and APIs.
  • Experience implementing current technology trends such as cloud-based solutions with microservices.
  • Ability to interpret business challenges and recommend best practices to improve SDLC processes.
  • Advanced delivery skills: determine design strategy, use automated tests, provide feedback loops, ensure quality and production readiness, monitor health of work efforts.
  • Domain expertise with ability to develop partnerships, influence priorities, and apply industry trends.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with data-driven approaches and concept validation.
  • Excellent communication: describe technology concepts for the business, document initiatives clearly, collaborate effectively, and listen actively.
  • Leadership: ability to take action, inspire others, and influence teams.
Must Have
  • Bachelor\'s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Three years of programming/development experience.
