Overview

Director, Software Engineering — As a Capital One Director of Software Engineering, you will work on customer-facing web and mobile applications using cutting-edge open source frameworks, highly-available RESTful microservices, back-end Java-based systems, and Machine Learning models using advanced Big Data techniques. You bring solid experience in databases, API development, and cloud computing. You are proficient in one or more programming languages such as Go, Java, Python, Rust, or Typescript, and demonstrate strong collaboration skills to partner effectively with cross-functional stakeholders and product managers.

You will

• Lead, manage and grow multiple teams of product-focused software engineers.
• As a Manager of the AI Solutions team, deliver innovative solutions that unify, enrich, and extract insights from various data sources across the enterprise.
• Provide guidance and perform software development work to ensure solutions are properly engineered and maintained to support customer needs.
• Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of engineers on your team.
• Spearhead workstream execution and ensure robust process and project delivery management.
• Work with product managers to understand desired application capabilities and testing scenarios.
• Continuously improve software engineering practices.
• Work within and across Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement, and support technical solutions across full-stack development tools and technologies.
• Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of your solutions.
• Stay on top of tech trends, experiment with new technologies, participate in technology communities, and mentor other engineers.
• Encourage innovation, cutting-edge technologies, inclusion, teamwork, self-organization, and diversity.
• Improve velocity across teams and deploy applications into AWS environments.
• Break monolithic applications into microservice architectures and build new microservices.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree
• At least 7 years of software development experience
• At least 5 years of people management experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering
• 10+ years of software development experience
• 7+ years of experience managing engineering teams
• 4+ years in AI, Data Science, or Machine Learning with hands-on experience in AI/ML workflows
• 2+ years in developing Generative AI models and frameworks (OpenAI family, open source LLMs, Retrieval Augmented Generation)
• 5+ years of experience in Agile practices

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries are for candidates hired to work within these locations and refer to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of posting.

McLean, VA: $263,900 - $301,200; New York, NY: $287,800 - $328,500; Richmond, VA: $239,900 - $273,800. Other locations follow the applicable pay range for that location, with the final amount shown in the offer letter.

This role is eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives. Incentives can be discretionary depending on the plan.
