Overview

Director of State and Local Government Relations to join Total Wine & More's Public Affairs team in Bethesda, MD. One position based at the SSC in Bethesda, MD and one position remotely based on the west coast. You will advance Total Wine & More's legislative, regulatory, political and community positions with state and local officials, community and civic leaders, industry members and the public. You will promote our image externally, ensuring that image is positive and consistent for all audiences. You will work cooperatively with internal departments to identify issues that require government affairs solutions and create and execute an action plan to achieve our goals. You will demonstrate outstanding organizational and personal communication skills and have experience related to lobbying regulated industries, the state and local legislative process, regulatory and administrative responsibilities, campaign experience, public relations and community outreach. You will report to the Senior Vice President, Government Relations & Public Affairs.

Base pay range $143,100.00/yr - $235,200.00/yr

Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee government affairs initiatives, including direct and grassroots lobbying efforts targeting elected officials and community leaders, as well as managing legislative and regulatory issues and political engagement strategies.
  • Effectively communicate key issues, priorities, and strategic plans to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage and coordinate a network of local and state public affairs consultants, including lobbyists, public relations teams, and external vendors.
  • Serve as the company's representative in industry and community organizations, associations, and public forums.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to ensure Total Wine & More's messaging and themes are consistently and positively conveyed to all audiences—from the general public and community leaders to elected officials, media outlets, and industry groups.
  • Identify and pursue strategic media opportunities and community partnerships at local and regional levels to enhance and build the Total Wine & More brand.
  • Support internal departments in addressing external affairs needs and objectives.
  • Partner across Total Wine & More departments to create favorable conditions for company growth and expansion.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts, Communications, Business, Political Science, Public Policy, or related field preferred or equivalent experience
  • Master's Degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years in public affairs or public service preferred
  • Experience working in a regulated industry
  • Ability to build relationships with key government officials and industry stakeholders
  • Ability to analyze and report on legislative proposals and regulatory changes
  • Ability to develop materials for advocacy and outreach efforts
  • Strong business communication skills
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a changing, fast-paced environment
