Laboratory Technician – Joliet, IL Area
About the Role
Brunel is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join a refinery laboratory team in the Joliet, IL area. This position plays a key role in ensuring the quality and compliance of finished products and intermediate streams through accurate testing and reporting. The role is structured for a 40-hour work week (Monday to Friday), with potential overtime depending on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform finished product and intermediate stream testing for fuels and chemical products, including MOGAS, #2 ULSD, Asphalt (PG 64-22), Propane HD-5 (LPG), Normal Butane, and PGP.
- Prepare solutions accurately according to directions and maintain detailed records of test results.
- Receive and log samples through the LIMS system, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Execute tests in line with ASTM, AASHTO, SM, and other quality standards
- Conduct GC (Gas Chromatography) and ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) analysis, reporting results in a timely manner.
- Review test accuracy before and after reporting, identify out-of-spec results, notify appropriate personnel, and retest when required.
- Perform SQC (Statistical Quality Control) analysis as scheduled and record results in SampleManager.
- Ensure proper response to run rule or out-of-control violations.
- Monitor laboratory equipment, recognize when instruments require maintenance or removal from service, and document actions taken.
- Carry out specified calibrations and communicate results to Chemist/Specialist as appropriate.
- Support safe and reliable lab operations by adhering to established safety protocols and PPE requirements.
- Request and inspect quality supplies as needed to support continuous operations.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum 2–3 years of laboratory experience, ideally in a refinery, petrochemical, or related environment.
- Strong working knowledge of GC and ICP methods
- Familiarity with ASTM/AASHTO test methods and refinery quality assurance processes.
- Experience with sample management systems (LIMS, SampleManager).
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with laboratory instrumentation.
- Excellent attention to detail, data accuracy, and time management.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple testing priorities
